Bill Me Later Extends eBay?s Payments Reach to Top Web Retailers

(October 6, 2008) In praising online credit payment system Bill Me Later Inc. Monday morning, PayPal Inc. President Scott Thompson called Bill Me Later a “disruptive business” in the positive sense, and he credited PayPal for also being a disruptive payments player. And disruption of the status quo is quite possible with today’s announcement that PayPal parent company eBay Inc. will buy the 8-year-old Bill Me Later for $820 million in cash and another $125 million of outstanding options net of option exercise proceeds. Bill Me Later chief executive officer Gary Marino will now report to Thompson.

Why Bill Me Later Said "Buy Me Today" To eBay

The timing of eBay’s $945 million purchase of electronic payments up-n-comer Bill Me Later is certainly interesting. After all, the outlook for e-commerce sales is looking more dour by the hour, and BML’s business model is based in part on volume. It’s also based on the cost of capital, which is critical since BML’s business is to finance purchases by online shoppers who prefer to hit the Bill Me Later icon found on many sites rather than give a credit card number.

eBay Acquires Bill Me Later

eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Bill Me Later®, the number two online-oriented payments brand, for approximately $820 million in cash and approximately $125 million worth of outstanding options, net of option exercise proceeds. The acquisition extends the company’s leadership in payments by combining Bill Me Later with eBay’s PayPal, the number one online-oriented payments brand. Subject to various closing conditions, the deal is expected to be completed by year-end.

eBay's Bill Me Later a Bad Idea

Doesn't John Donahoe get it? Bill Me Later may increase sales but it will ultimately drive the last seller from eBay (EBAY) because allowing buyers to purchase wish list type items they can't afford without a short term extension of credit doesn't make sense.

eBay Snaps Up Bill Me Later, Cuts 1000 Employees

Plenty of Upside for eBay in Bill Me Later Deal, Experts Say

(October 8, 2008) Ebay Inc.’s $945 million acquisition of online payment processor Bill Me Later Inc., announced this week (Digital Transactions News, Oct. 6), places a powerful payment-generating tool in the online auctioneer’s hands and simultaneously denies that tool to competitors like Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., experts tell Digital Transactions News. And the deal comes at a time when alternative-payments products are poised to swipe an increasing share of online sales volume from network-branded cards, crimping more and more of the flow of interchange income banks earn from those cards, a report released this week says.

Granting Credit: Is eBay's Bill Me Later Part of the Solution or Part of the Problem?

On the same day the public markets are tanking because of the spreading credit crisis, we see one of the biggest M&A exits of the year with eBay acquiring Bill Me Later for $945 million ($820 million in cash, plus an extra $125 million in options). This is for a company that lets consumers defer payment when they buy things online. Remember, loose credit is part of the reason we are in the current economic mess.

IBM to release Lotus iNotes for iPhone later this year

Lotus Notes: the office software everyone loves to hate. Despite the divisive feelings that Notes inspires, many large enterprises rely on Lotus Notes to access their e-mail, group calendars, and contacts. There are times when you need to be away from the office, so Lotus makes a web client called iNotes to access Notes info remotely. IBM is now planning to add an iPhone-optimized web client for Notes, called Lotus iNotes Ultralite, later this year.

Three Words That Could Overthrow Physics: ?What Is Magnetism??

When Pliny the Elder first beheld a magnet, he was utterly blown away. “What phenomenon is more astonishing?” he wrote later. “Where has nature shown greater audacity?” In the fifth century, St. Augustine of Hippo agreed, declaring himself “thunderstruck” by the sight of a magnet lifting several metal rings. Magnets, he announced, were proof that miracles were real and that God, therefore, existed. “Who would not be amazed,” Augustine marveled, “at this virtue of the stone?” Certainly the 4-year-old Albert Einstein was amazed. When his father showed him a compass, it was young Albert’s first clue, he later wrote, that there was “something behind things, something deeply hidden,” and he spent his life trying to find it.

What’s not to like about it? Here’s a little walkthrough, plus later on my initial impressions."

The Console Wars: Why They Have Just Begun

GotGame’s Tim Bavlnka writes: "With the release of the Xbox 360 in November of 2006, Microsoft had a full year to gain a majority of the market share, and did so with the release of great game exclusives, and a reasonably affordable next-gen console. A year later, the Wii and the PS3 were released, and while two years later, the PS3 sales have been somewhat sluggish, losing Sony $3 billion dollars. When Metal Gear Solid 4 came out, the PS3 definitely picked itself up by its bootstraps and began to sell competitively…two years too late."

Be Part of the 2008 Presidential Youth Debate

We participated in this project back in 2004. This year it's hosted by Walden University, and the format is a little less cumbersome than it was four years ago. So go ahead, ask some questions you'd like to see McCain and Obama answer, and they'll go into the pot along with questions submitted through other channels. Later this week you'll have a chance to help moderate the final questions chosen from all sources, and on October 20 you'll be able to see video responses from the two major party candidates. Please limit to yourself to one question per post, and note that questions must be posted no later than 4 p.m. US EDT on Monday, September 29, to be considered.
