The best batting pitches in Tests

Last week's column focused on the best batting surfaces in ODIs; this time the attention shifts to Test venues. The general verdict from experts is that pitches all over the world have eased up in the last few years, favouring batsmen much more than they used to. England has always offered a bit to the seam and swing bowlers, but batsmen have had more than their share of success recently. The last five Tests at Lord's have all been drawn, and while the weather has had a part to play in the last two verdicts, there have still been five scores of more than 500 here since 2005. After the first day against South Africa, England seem well on their way to another big total.

Using Last To Its Full Potential On Linux

"This probably comes as no surprise to most Unix or Linux administrators out there (at least this first thing), but I find it's always interesting how rarely the 'last' command is used to determine anything other than the users logged in 'now' and the 'last' time a user logged in.

Listen Online To Last HOPE Conference

Radio Statler! writes "This weekend marks 2600's last Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE) conference at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. For those of you that can't make it this weekend, Radio Statler! will be streaming live from the event the whole weekend. There will be simulcasted talks, interviews with speakers and important guests, and music 24 hours a day for the duration of the con. Listeners can request music or submit questions by phone or IRC." The conference schedule (PDF) is available if you're curious about a particular seminar, though not all of them will be broadcast. CNet will be running some related stories about presentations from the conference. So far, they've written about a hacking how-to presentation. We briefly discussed the seventh and final HOPE conference last month.

Ponting proud of last day Aussie fightback

KINGSTON (Agencies): Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes it was gratifying to see his side fight back and conquer West Indies in the opening Test on Monday at Sabina Park. A rare batting collapse in their second innings saw Australia set West Indies 287 for victory, but Stuart Clark captured a career-best five wickets for 32 runs to bowl Australia to a 95-run win. "It's been a pretty good Test from first day to last," Ponting said. "It was pretty entertaining. Our best overall cricket was probably played on the first day and the last. "We spoke at length before the start (on Monday) about how we wanted to attack them, what we needed to do, and how we wanted to execute things if we wanted to win the game. "I think coming into the final day, the game was in the balance.

Apple 3G iPhone shortages to last at least until August

Shortages of Apple's new 3G iPhone are likely to last until at least August, according to Wall Street analysts. The next generation of Apple's popular iPhone went on sale in 21 countries last weekend, with Apple reporting sales of over one million handsets in the first three days, but the huge demand caught Apple unawares, according to Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray.

World's oldest blogger signs off for the last time, aged 108

An Australian woman renowned as the world's oldest blogger has died at the age of 108. Her last post described her ailing health but also how she still sang a happy song every day. Olive Riley, of Woy Woy about 50 miles north of Sydney, began blogging in February last year, sharing stories from her life during the two world wars, raising three children on her own, and working as a station cook in the outback.

Napster Activists: Company Worth At Least As Much As Last.Fm

imageBack in May we mentioned that three subscribers/shareholders of Napster had launched an improbable proxy fight hoping to get themselves representation on the company’s board. That still looks like a pretty tall order for the trio, though they’ve filed an interesting analysis on why they’re pressing their case. The core argument: Napster’s market value is basically zero (market cap minus saleable assets), yet CBS (NYSE: CBS) paid $280 million for Last.fm. Given that Napster should be able to do everything Last.fm can do and more, and it actually has real paying customers, the company should be valued higher. The fact that it’s not valued higher, say the shareholders, is due to a “lack of confidence in governance.”

Idol Ratings on Par; Cook Tops iTunes Charts; Disney Details

Despite a season-long ratings drop, last night’s season-ending episode of American Idol kept pace with last season’s finale as 31.7 million viewers tuned in to watch the final round of Archuleta vs. Cook. Meanwhile, David Cook is already enjoying his victory lap on iTunes where his first post-Idol single “The Time of My Life” has already rocketed to the number one position on their Top Songs list. Collective Soul have a debt to pay to Cook as their “The World I Know,” the last song Cook performed on Tuesday night, is also charting. In other post-finale news, the details of the Jordin Sparks-endorsed DisneyWorld attraction “The American Idol Experience” have surfaced. Opening in January 2009, it will allow participants to perform in mock auditions, with each day’s best singer winning a “Dream Ticket” that will allow t

New media blogger tells all, to old media

Hell hath no fury like the blogosphere scorned. For the last six days, the New York media blogosphere has been consumed in a fascinating psychodrama that is equal parts biblical, technological and Oedipal. Last Tuesday afternoon, readers of Gawker.com were alerted that the upcoming Sunday New York Times Magazine would give over its cover to Emily Gould, one of the site's former editors, for a 10-page confessional about her life as a blogger. The 26-year-old Gould was not just any blogger: She had spent much of her year at Gawker, which she left last December, revealing deeply personal details of herself and her relationships.

KEN SILVERSTEIN-Blogger Roundtable Coordinator: Let's find people to "carry our water"

Once more I’m going to return to the topic of those blogger roundtables organized by the Pentagon, which I have discussed several times since last summer and most recently last month. In that last item, I discussed the New York Times story that revealed how the Pentagon worked with retired military officials and prepared them to serve as supposedly independent media “analysts.” That was part of a broader Defense Department media program that included the blogger roundtables, and which looked for “surrogates” to whom Pentagon talking points could be fed.

Pushing a CPU to Heat Death, Intentionally

sdougal writes "This site is showing a Pico-ITX board running Ubuntu with no cooling whatsoever. They even let the public guess how long it would last: 'Last week thousands of you placed bets on how long the new Pico-ITX board from VIA, the VIA EPIA PX5000EG, can last without any cooling whatsoever. An ARTiGO Builder Kit was offered as the grand prize. Yesterday afternoon the voting stopped and the Naked Pico Challenge started in earnest. We simply loaded up Ubuntu 8.04, set it to work playing an mpeg-4 video and then removed the heatsink, leaving the CPU and VX700 chipset bare to the world. We recorded the event here in this video and set up a live video stream so you punters can keep a watchful eye on the PX5000EG as it works away.'"

Square Enix's E3 Line Up - Where Is Final Fantasy XIII?

"So what does RPG giant Square Enix have in store for E3 2008? Why RPGs, of course. The publisher's lineup doesn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been following the company since last E3. Starting on the portable side of things they'll be showing the remake Chrono Trigger for the Nintendo DS, along with Dragon Quest: Chapters of the Chosen and the Final Fantasy IV remake, with the PSP represented by their two Star Ocean remakes First Departure and Second Evolution. In console land we'll get a look at Xbox 360 exclusives Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean: The Last Hope, as well as The Last Remnant for the 360 and PlayStation 3. Topping things off will be Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes, the company's new iPod game."

Last night's farce

EdgbastonI'm up in Scotland at the Amateur Championship (golf), but got back to my hotel to watch the end of last night's one-day international at Edgbaston. Yet again, players and officials seemed to forget that their primary purpose in life is to entertain the public, those poor saps whose money goes into the game and helps to pay for Kevin Pietersen's future children's future school fees (sorry to pick on KP but he brought it up first).

Last Bytes: AOL, eBay, Apple, Google

Microsoft and Yahoo have intensified discussions with Time Warner about buying AOL. For Jerry Yang, an AOL tie-up may be his last hope to maintain control of Yahoo. Microsoft's Steve Ballmer may buy AOL just to spite Yang. [Reuters, Portfolio.com]
