First known digital music recording surfaces

A crackly analogue recording made in 1951 is the earliest known example of a digital computer making music, say UK historians.

Galaxy's youngest known supernova is 140 years old

Astronomers have discovered the youngest known supernova in the Milky Way galaxy, still just a baby at 140 years old. The scientists, who announced their findings Wednesday, used a radio observatory in New Mexico and NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory in space to identify when the supernova, or stellar, explosion occurred. They put the star-dying event at sometime around 1868.

Dody Goodman, Comedienne and Actress, Dead at 92

Dody Goodman, whose ditzy comic persona was well known to patrons of theatre, film and television from the 1950s on, died June 22 at the Actors Fund Home in New Jersey, a spokesperson for the Fund confirmed. Her age was thought to be 92 by many accounts, though the subject of her birthdate was something she was known to falsify throughout her career. Her agent said she was 94.

The Protein NPC1 Polices Macrophage Cholesterol Traffic

Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arterial blood vessels that is often known as hardening of the arteries. It is caused in part by the accumulation in the artery wall of cells (mostly cells known as macrophages) that contain fats (mostly cholesterol).

Supernova Birth Observed From Orbiting Telescope

FiReaNGeL writes "Astronomers have seen the aftermath of spectacular stellar explosions known as supernovae before, but until now no one has witnessed a star dying in real time — until now. While looking at another object in the spiral galaxy NGC 2770, using NASA's orbiting Swift telescope, scientists detected an extremely luminous blast of X-rays released by a supernova explosion. They alerted 8 other telescopes to turn their eyes on this first-of-its-kind event. 'We were looking at another, older supernova in the galaxy, when the one now known as SN 2008D went off. We would have missed it if it weren't for Swift's real-time capabilities, wide field of view, and numerous instruments.'" Bad Astronomy has an excellent, well-illustrated story about the discovery as well.

Trade Secrets and NDAs

Trade secrets are confidential business information that have value because they are not generally known and are the subject of efforts by the business to keep the information confidential. The most well known example of a trade secret is the formula for Coke. Every company, however, has trade secrets (e.g., customer lists, source code for software, methods of creating products, etc.). Every state has enacted laws to protect trade secrets. There are also federal laws that provide additional protection for trade secrets by way of severe civil and criminal penalties for theft or other misappropriation of trade secrets.

Lizard Lives Most Of Its Life In Egg

There is a newly discovered life history among the 28,300 species of known tetrapods, or four-legged animals with backbones. A chameleon from arid southwestern Madagascar spends up to three-quarters of its life in an egg. Even more unusual, life after hatching is a mere 4 to 5 months. No other known four-legged animal has such a rapid growth rate and such a short life span. The new research is reported in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Saltwater Sleuths: Seeking Clues To Help Determine The Ages Of Fish And Shellfish Populations

Fishery biologist Sandy Sutherland looks through the lens of the microscope at tiny sections of fish earbones, known as otoliths, each showing annual bands of growth. She carefully counts the bands to determine the age of the fish, then moves on to the next sample. Known as an age reader, Sutherland is one of a small team at NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) whose aging work is critical to stock assessments needed to manage the nation’s fishery resources in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Secure Computing Strengthens Secure Firewall with Geo-Location Identification and Blocking

Secure Computing Corporation (NASDAQ: SCUR), a leading enterprise gateway security company, today unveiled Secure Firewall (formerly known as Sidewinder®) Geo-Location, a new service that allows organizations to create policies that block connections by an IP address (for any network protocol/application), based on country code information. Secure Computing's Secure Firewall is the first and only firewall to provide organizations with the ability to reduce their exposure to attack by essentially shrinking the size of the Internet. Geo-Location does this by blocking or allowing the organization to apply additional in-depth application filtering on all traffic from countries that they do not do business with, or that are known originators of malicious hacking.

Mission Why Bother: Tom Cruise Promises To BlogOr Will The Site Just Self-Destruct?

Okay, stop jumping up and down on the couch. This is important: actor Tom Cruise is celebrating 25 years since his first starring movie role with a new website, TomCruise.com. And he is promising to blog about life on the set. Rather than being known for his films, lately the three-time Academy Award nominee has been better known for his couch-hopping activity on Oprah, his war of words with Brooke Shields over anti-depressants and his bizarre Scientology video ("It’s rough and tumble, it’s wild and woolly..."). USA Today highlights Cruise’s blog promise. On his site, Cruise states he wants to “bring you in and share with you the fun I experience every day during the filmmaking process, from working with the script, to the making of the film through to what we finally see when we settle in our seats and the lights go down.

Student Loan Consolidate - Personal Loan Consolidation - School Loan Consolidation 061

Online debt consolidation services are provided by various firms and are one of the most effective ways to save on debt consolidation. Customers are expected to be careful when researching for debt consolidators that offer online debt consolidation programs. In the United States this is known as a debt consolidation plan and in the United Kingdom it can be referred to in its highest form as an individual voluntary arrangement or IVA (known as a Protected Trust Deed, or PTD, in Scotland). Because your debt is reduced to one payment, you may be tempted to charge against other credit cards that offer an enhanced credit limit. These agencies are in business to help people out of their debts and not to make a profit. One must never continue to use other credit options, as this will certainly spell further disaster.

Companies To Be Liable For Deals With Online Criminals

Dionysius, God of Wine and Leaf, sends us to DarkReading for a backgrounder on new rules from the FTC, taking effect in November, that will require any business that handles private consumer data to check its customers and suppliers against databases of known online criminals. Companies that fail to do so may be liable for large fines or jail time. In practice, most companies will contract with specialist services to perform these checks. Yet another list you don't want to get on. "The [FTC's] Red Flag program... requires enterprises to check their customers and suppliers against databases of known online criminals — much like what OFAC [the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Asset Control] does with terrorists — and also carries potential fines and penalties for businesses that don't do their due diligence before making a major
