Israeli cinema embraces new identities

PARIS: Summer in the city is not all about light entertainment. Israeli cinema has been captivating Paris audiences, especially with the release of two films that made their debuts in Cannes. "Vals im Bashir" (Waltz with Bashir), Ari Folman's bold animated documentary, towered over the Cannes competition - and is stirring new audiences. Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz's "Shiva" (The Seven Days), which opened the Critics' Week, has since been shown at the Israeli film festival in Marseille and at the Paris Cinema festival.

Ari Folman's journey into a heart of darkness

CANNES: Ari Folman has brilliant blue eyes in a weathered face: this is the face you see in "Waltz with Bashir," his animated feature documentary. The Israeli filmmaker, even at 45, looks like a man who could stop bullets. But he could not. The story he tells and the cinematic style he tells it in emerge from the hell of war: in 1982 the Israeli incursion into Lebanon lead to the massacre of Palestinian refugees at the Sabra and Shatila camps. The Israeli troops stood by and let the Christian Phalangist militia kill off the Palestinians in the camps. The film that Folman made is about this trauma. It is the story of a generation, the early '80s teenage Israelis who left their rock 'n' roll dance halls, roared off to war without a pang, and then resumed their lives.

E-commerce start-up Plimus raises $18m

Hundreds of Israeli start-up companies operate beneath the radar. They are successful, known, and sometimes even profitable, yet no venture capital fund or institution has invested in them. They finance themselves through personal funds and money from family, friends, or angels - the classic model for bootstrap companies. Once a certain period has elapsed, they occasionally change their usual practice and seek venture capital funding. The move made recently by Israeli e-commerce start-up Plimus Corp. is impressive by any scale. From a minimal investment by private investors, it jumped to $18 million, the amount usually raised in a third or fourth round - all of it from one investor.
