Seems someone is desperately trying to shed his Luddite image when it comes to technology. You see, Old Man McCain doesn't need to be able to use a computer, surf the Internets, or know what Google really is, because he's invented the Blackberry. I guess McCain and Ted "Series of Tubes" Stevens have more in common than just Sarah Palin's support for the Bridge to Nowhere. Hey, if you believe McCain invented the Blackberry, then I have a bridge in Alaska to sell you!

1. Conventional wisdom says that Dutchman Hans Lippershey invented the telescope in 1608, but legend has it that the device was really invented three years earlier by kids playing with lenses in a spectacle-maker’s shop. That kind of stuff used to happen in the days before the Xbox.

For years, we've pointed out how ridiculous it is that our patent system doesn't include an independent invention defense. It seems rather against the concept of promoting innovation to say that someone who invented something entirely independently should be barred from using his own invention just because someone else invented the same thing slightly earlier. Considering just how many major discoveries are discovered independently by multiple people, this seems especially troublesome. In fact, various research papers have been written about why an independent invention defense makes a lot of sense.

The role-playing game was invented by Americans (thanks, Gary Gygax, for "Dungeons & Dragons"), but it's always been somewhat of a niche product among U.S. video-game enthusiasts. Sure, RPG series like "Final Fantasy" and "Diablo" have their stateside devotees, but they're far outnumbered by fans of shooters like "Halo" or sports games like "Madden NFL."
