"If indeed illegal wiretaps were made against Minister Ramon during the police investigation into his matter, this must be looked into," he wrote. He added, however, that "The last people who have the right to discuss this are Israel's government [ministers]."

Electronic Transaction Reporting Slipped Into Senate Bill

StealthyRoid writes "The Senate mortgage bill proposed by Sen. Chris Dodd (who was the recipient of a sweetheart deal on his mortgage from Countrywide, one of the beneficiaries of the bill) includes an attempt to sneak into law a requirement that all electronic payment processors send detailed transaction data to the federal government. The proposed law contains an exception for businesses with fewer than 200 transactions or a total value less than $10,000. Quoting FreedomWorks chairman Dick Armey (former House majority leader) from the article: 'This is a provision with astonishing reach, and it was slipped into the bill just this week. Not only does it affect nearly every credit card transaction in America, such as Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express, but the bill specifically targets payment systems like eBay's PayPal, Ama

Simple Mod Turns Diodes Into Photon Counters

KentuckyFC writes "The standard way to detect single photons is to use an avalanche photodiode in which a single photon can trigger an avalanche of current. These devices have an important drawback, however. They cannot distinguish the arrival of a single photon from the simultaneous arrival of two or more. But a team of physicists in the UK has found a simple mod that turns avalanche photodiodes into photon counters. They say that in the first instants after the avalanche forms, its current is proportional to the number of photons that have struck. All you have to do is measure it at this early stage. That's like turning a Fiat 500 into a Ferrari. Photon counting is one of the enabling technologies behind optical quantum computing. A number of schemes are known in which it is necessary to count the arrival of 0, 1 or 2 photons at specifi

"Shake, Shake, Shake" Gets Soil into Phoenix TEGA

When Bill Boynton announced at a Phoenix lander team meeting earlier today that the troublesome, clumpy Martian soil now sits, finally, within the TEGA "oven" on Phoenix, the room erupted with cheers and a standing ovation. Boynton then launched a rendition of "Shake, Shake, Shake" he had cued-up on his laptop, and started dancing. If that mental image doesn't make it clear, getting the soil into TEGA is big, and the entire Phoenix team is excited about the accomplishment. Boynton, who leads the investigations with the Thermal and Evolved Gas Analyzer instrument, and his team have been trying various methods for several days to get the stubborn soil through a screen and into TEGA. The instrument will heat the soil and analyze the gases released to check for water vapor and other chemicals in the soil.

Controllable Synthesis of Cu2S Nanocrystals and Their Assembly into a Superlattice

S nanocrystals with controllable sizes and shapes (circular and elongated) have been synthesized through a novel water−oil interface confined reaction. They can self-assemble into highly ordered multilayer superlattices. By controlling the size and shape of building block nanocrystals, the packing symmetry of the superlattice can be engineered. For circular nanocrystals, both fcc and hcp multilayer superlattices are found in the sample. For elongated nanocrystals, they can also generate a close-packed layer and further stack into a multilayer superlattice. The dipole moment of the inner nanocrystals is useful for their stacking. This work provides a simple bottom-up approach to integrate nanocrystals, as well as to adjust the packing symmetry of the final superlattice, which may have potential applications for nanomaterials and nanodevi

Online Shopping In Poland: How To Turn "Lookers" Into "Buyers"

The eCommerce market in Poland is full of potential. It's growing faster than Western European markets and is overtaking Southern European countries such as Spain and Italy. Polish consumers are estimated to have spent more than €2 billion online in 2007, and this number is expected to grow quickly as Polish consumers become wealthier. Polish online consumers use the Internet to gather information about products and services but still head to a high-street store for the actual purchase. It's essential that e-retailers in Poland find ways to turn these "lookers" into "buyers." Retailers and manufacturers must recognize that Polish online shoppers are different from their Western European neighbors, and they must take these differences into account when positioning their brands in the Polish eCommerce market to win consumers over.

Blogging myths

I’ve been into this thing called blogging for several months now. And like millions of people in the planet who are hooked into it, I’ve been unabashedly chronicling my life. I’ve been updating my friends online about great moments in history—like where I went for coffee last night and how I fell into a fishpond last week.

Games preview: iPhone Games

Mobile games fall into one of three categories: 1) over-complicated versions of well known console games in no way suited to the small screen and unresponsive phone keyboard. 2) 1980s arcade games - the sheer ennui threatens to overwhelm. 3) Joyously new and inventive titles that bear in mind the staccato usage and simple controls necessary to work on a phone. So few fall into the last camp that mobile games are near worth ignoring. Will Apple's promised 160 iPhone games change that? Early signs are at least positive, with the iPhone remix of that megalith of galactic evolution, Spore, shaping into something intriguing; Bomberman, while unproven on a touch screen, is normally pretty reliable; LocoRoco-alike Rolando promises some cute tilt-based gaming and Super Monkey Ball already has punters forming a virtual queue round the block.

Multi-page PDF To Multi-page TIFF and Archiving?

GeorgeMonroy writes "One of my clients has aperture cards that they have been scanning into multi-page PDF files — but now they want them in multi-page TIFFs instead. One of the reasons they gave for this is that TIFF files require less storage space. While that is true, I wonder if TIFF is the best format going into the future. Are TIFFs better than PDFs for future use? I wonder what format you think would last longer. Are there any other formats that you think would be better or more future-proof? To me, storage is not a good enough reason to go to TIFF, because storage prices are always dropping anyway. Also, since they already have many of these files in PDF format and they want to convert them into multipage TIFFs, are there any programs that you can recommend that will perform batch processing of files so that we do not have to co
