Xbox 360 Getting a 3D Interface?

Kotaku reports that the Xbox 360 might be getting a 3D face-lift as part of its Spring update. This update will bring a Minority Report-like interface with floating menus that can be interacted with, to the gaming console. This new interface is said to be an option along with the current Blade UI. Furthermore, as a rumour within a rumour, it was indicated that the new interface will be navigated via motion controls through a new Wii Remote-like game controller (rumoured) to be revealed at E3 later this month.

Past Helio/Sidekick designer reworking Palm...

One of the most prominent phone interface designers is now working for Palm for its next operating system, Engadget confirms in a hunt for new information. Matias Duarte, who designed much of the interface behind the Danger Sidekick and later moved on to Helio's custom interface, is now known through checks with sources and Palm itself to be a Senior Director in Palm's Human Interface and User Experience design group. The new executive quietly left his former post at Helio for the new position nearly two years ago in September 2007.

Amazing Wii-Like 3-D Controller Interface Built With Foil, Wiring, Resistors and Arduino

What you're looking at here is an actual Wii-like 3-D controller interface that can track objects like your hand in real time. It may look a little shoddy, but what's amazing is that this very functional 3-D interface was built by a hobbyist with parts most DIYers can find in their couch cushions—six resistors, aluminum foil, wire, a cardboard box, and an Arduino microprocessor to crunch the numbers. That's it. It couldn't be more simple. But how'd he pull it off?

Xbox 360 Live Dashboard Getting Motion-Controlled Minority Report 3D Interface

Kotaku's pirate ear to the ground is picking up from sources that the Live dashboard will be updated with a spanky new interface option: what Crecente says is a Minority Report-like 3D interface that'll make use of that long-rumored motion controller. (In addition to those 80 functions that didn't materialize in a Spring Update.) The "motion controls will allow users to sort of slide through the different levels of this floating menu system." Sounds slick, it was taking me too long to flip through all those blades. [Kotaku]

Goosh: a Shell for Google

IconIt's an ever-continuing debate: what is better, a graphical user interface, or a command-line interface? Graphical user interfaces may be easier to learn, but complicated operations may require a lot more user input than with a command line interface, which can perform several complicated operations by using a short sequence of words and characters. However, a CLI has a much steeper learning curve than a GUI. Google has always had a certain CLI-quality to it, and Stefan Grothkopp decided to take this a few steps further: say hello to Goosh.

$100 Laptop Platform Moves On

The BBC is reporting that Sugar Labs is planning on taking "Sugar", the XO laptop's innovative interface, to the next level and distribute to a broader audience. "Sugar is a user interface that allows children to collaborate even when working on different machines. For example, they can write documents or make music together. The open source software also contains a journal and automatically saves and backs up all data. [...] Sugar Labs will work closely with developers from the open source community to develop the user interface for other computers and operating systems. It has already been bundled with the most recent releases of the Ubuntu and Fedora Linux operating systems."

Visual Communication in Digital Design

stoolpigeon writes "I remember the first time I saw a program I had written after the interface had been revamped by a designer. I had been pretty happy with what I had made. It worked very well and met the client's requirements. It was extremely functional and I thought it didn't look bad either. But when I saw the new interface, not functionally different, just so much better looking, I was really blown away. My application had gone from useful to cool. (That might be a slight exaggeration, it was still just a database app but it sure looked cool to me.) Since then I've learned to primarily leave the user interface work to the experts in that arena, and I stick to the getting the functionality in place. But sometimes I don't have the luxury of a design team at my disposal.

Zumobi Launches Its Widget User Interface For BlackBerry Devices

imageZumobi, which has created an ad-supported user interface using widgets, said its BlackBerry application is now officially available. NIA Brain-Computer Interface, Mind-Control Gaming

MojoKid writes "Sunnyvale-based manufacturer OCZ Technology has laid claim to being the first to bring a 'brain-computer' interface to the retail market and they have aimed it squarely at the gamer. The device is called the NIA, which is an acronym that stands for Neural Impulse Actuator. Instead of buttons, sticks, gyroscopes or motion sensors, it reads the body's natural bio-signals and translates them into commands that can be used to control PC games. This evaluation of the NIA shows the product actually works as advertised, with a little practice. It can, in some cases, offer reaction times superior to standard controllers, based on faster trigger response time, and the difference is quite noticeable and immediate."

Patent filings point to Mac touch interface

Apple has been exploring technology that would let it implement a touchscreen interface for its full-size computers, according to new US Patent Office filings. The company has developed methods that would let users edit music, photos, and videos simply by making natural gestures based on controls with analogies to the real world: a DJ could add record scratch effects and mix tracks by turning the records themselves, while a video editor could scrub through clips by dragging along the timeline and a photo tool could use a virtual scroll wheel to quickly flip through photos.
