With so many problems with various e-voting systems, many have wondered why various state governments don't simply require any e-voting system to be open sourced. It makes a tremendous amount of sense. Any trustworthy voting process needs to require transparency in how the votes are recorded and counted. Letting a hidden algorithm do the counting makes no sense. Open source e-voting code would be open to scrutiny, and would almost certainly lead to fewer problems and greater security. Yet, for some reason, election officials have always bought into the e-voting vendors' false claims that open source code is somehow dangerous to an election.

Enterprises are increasingly interested in cloud computing as a potential solution to capacity challenges. The idea is that if you have a virtualized data center, the cloud could potentially be an “overflow” data center where you expand capacity during periods of high demand. If the cloud can extend your data center, then you don’t need to build another one or increase the capacity of the one you have just to handle intermitted spikes in computing demand.

BioTeam first became interested in Univa U's software efforts after hearing Univa CTO Steve Tuecke speak in Regensburg, Germany at the 2007 Grid Engine workshop. Shortly after that event Univa formally became Univa UD after merging with United Devices. At the time, Steve's company seemed to be one of the few companies positioning themselves to offer full support and professional services encompassing commonly used open source products such as Sun Grid Engine that BioTeam often works with in the field. Individually these popular open source resources are relatively easy to acquire but Univa UD seemed to be making an interesting effort to become the one stop shop for a fully supported and integrated set of commonly required tools and technology.
