It wouldn't be Computex without an Intel chipset launch. With today's arrival of Computex 2008, Intel has officially unveiled their 4-series of chipsets for desktop PCs. The 4-series launch consists of the G45, G43, P45, and P43 chipsets. The most significant addition in the new G45 chipset is without a doubt Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD. The new IGP boasts full support for DirectX 10 and Shader Model 4.0, although OpenGL 2.0 support won't be added until a driver update is provided sometime in Q3'08. As the "HD" in GMA X4500HD suggests, Intel is really highlighting video performance with the new IGP. The chip supports full hardware acceleration for MPEG2, AVC, and VC-1 decoding, ensuring smooth Blu-ray playback. G45 is also the first Intel chipset to support post-processing algorithms for HD playback, and supports HDMI/DVI w

Impy the Impiuos Imp writes to tell us that in a recent statement Intel has revealed their plans for the future and it goes well beyond the traditional processor model. Suggesting developers start thinking about tens, hundreds, or even thousand or cores, it seems Intel is pushing for a massive evolution in the way processing is handled. "Now, however, Intel is increasingly 'discussing how to scale performance to core counts that we aren't yet shipping...Dozens, hundreds, and even thousands of cores are not unusual design points around which the conversations meander,' [Anwar Ghuloum, a principle engineer with Intel's Microprocessor Technology Lab] said. He says that the more radical programming path to tap into many processing cores 'presents the 'opportunity' for a major refactoring of their code base, including changes in languages, lib

Intel and others form Open Patent Alliance for WiMAX Intel announced today the founding of the Open Patent Alliance, which they see as a step forward to WiMAX 4G technology development and deployment. Intel, along with Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Clearwire, Samsung and Sprint has formed the alliance, which will be essentially an IP-sharing conglomerate between the companies. The benefits to them are obvious. They will get better access to each other's technology and easier patent sharing, which could lead to them making hardware faster and releasing it sooner than competitors.

World investment fund Intel Capital, which recently gained a minority stake in Internet Mall, the largest Czech group of e-shops, plans further investments in the Czech Republic, according to Marcin Hejka, the director of strategic investments for Central and Eastern Europe at Intel Capital. Chances are high that the firm will announce an interesting investment in the Czech Republic already this year, he said. The Central and East European region is clearly the best place where investors can place their money in the coming years, Hejka said. Intel Capital looks at 300 to 500 opportunities in the whole region every year, and a large part of them is from the Czech Republic, he told daily Hospodářské noviny.

Cisco Systems, Intel and four other backers of a wireless Internet standard called WiMax said they want to help spread use of the technology by limiting possible patent royalties. Cisco, Intel, Samsung Electronics, Alcatel Lucent, Sprint Nextel and Clearwire will pool patents needed to develop equipment used on the new networks, making it easier for potential suppliers, Sriram Viswanathan, general manager of Intel Capital, said on a conference call. "It brings a mechanism to keep the royalty rates low," Viswanathan said. "It brings transparency." Backers of the technology want makers of consumer electronics to build printers, music-file players, digital cameras and other gadgets that will connect to the Internet using the new standard, executives on the call said.

andy1307 writes to tell us that according to the New York Times, The Federal Trade Commission has opened a formal antitrust investigation of Intel. Reversing the decision of former FTC chairperson Deborah P. Majoras, the new chair William E. Kovacic is pushing the investigation to look into Intel's pricing policies. "Since it will almost certainly be many months before the commission decides whether to make a case against Intel, as European and Asian regulators have already done, the investigation could mark an important early test for the next administration on antitrust and competition policy."

While Intel Corp.'s Q2 2008 results were quite impressive, not everyone came out of the quarter quite as strong as Intel did. AMD followed Intel in announcing quarterly earnings, and it contrasted Intel's gains with losses that were worse than expected. Now Microsoft and Google have followed in AMD's suit, each announcing earnings that disappointed in their own ways.

javipas writes "On June 8th, 1978 Intel introduced its first 16-bit microprocessor, the 8086. Intel used then "the dawn of a new era" slogan, and they probably didn't know how certain they were. Thirty years later we've seen the evolution of PC architectures based on the x86 instruction set that has been the core of Intel, AMD or VIA processors. Legendary chips such as Intel 80386, 80486, Pentium and AMD Athlon have a great debt to that original processor, and as recently was pointed out on Slashdot, x86 evolution still leads the revolution. Happy birthday and long live x86."

Alongside its new chipsets, Intel on Tuesday has also unveiled the Z-P230, a new version of its ultra-small solid-state drive. The flash disk is roughly four times smaller than a 1.8-inch hard drive found in an ultraportable notebook but holds either 4GB or 8GB of storage on chips that are no larger than a penny, as much as quadrupling the storage available through the Z-P140 introduced less than a year ago. The added capacity makes the drive a good match for handhelds as well as extremely low-cost desktops and notebooks, according to Intel.
