Urease as a Nanoreactor for Growing Crystalline ZnO Nanoshells at Room Temperature

Future growth of the electronics industry requires development of faster integrated circuits with reduced production costs and lower power consumption. More efficient circuits can be achieved by increasing the packing density of nanometer-sized circuit elements. This "nano-approach" also leads to light weight, which is especially important for various applications such as portable electronic devices. While present lithographic technology can produce nanoscale assembly in two-dimensions, a new generation of more densely packed integrated circuits requires three-dimensional assembly. This requires placement of nanometer scaled metal, semiconductor, insulator or quantum dot components in the exact positions necessary for construction of integrated circuits with high precision and reproducibility.

New Levels of Competitiveness in E-retailing: Robert Antall

Robert Antall, CEO, Lake West Group is speaking on the new level of competitiveness in e-retailing. His slides are busy, but he’s saying quite a few good things. I’m just writing down some ideas. Today’s innovation is tomorrow expectation Customer loyalty isn’t about getting people to buy more stuff from you, it’s about turning them into advocates. He uses Hertz as an example. They use customer information to understand what customers want, not send lame emails. The emerging competitor is “globally integrated:” multi-channel, international, vertically integrated, agnostic supply chain, integrated technology, and multi-brand. He cites Costco, Staples, Gucci, AutoZone, Nike, HomeDepot, Payless, and Starbucks as examples. Retail is generally slowing, but online is building in these companies.

Integrated XML converters for Office 2004 to arrive in June

Ready for an awesome joke? It goes a little something like this: "integrated Office 2004 XML format converters." Yes, the same file converters that Microsoft promised for between six and eight weeks after the launch of Office 2008, that got pushed back further when Office 2008 was delayed. The converters got delayed even further in February, and were said to be coming in June. Not content to take Microsoft's word this time around, Computerworld checked with Microsoft to make sure that the converters would be coming in June, to which the company responded that it "will have the converters ready."

Frequency Domain Analysis For RFICs Using The GoldenGate RFIC Simulator

RFICs (radio frequency integrated circuits) provide the backbone for wireless communication. Over the past several decades, the transceiver has evolved from discrete components into highly integrated circuits with several thousand transistors. The proliferation of cellular communications in addition to new standards such as 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, WiMax, UWB (ultra wideband), and others have pushed the envelope of historical design techniques. Most of the building blocks, such as LNAs (low-noise amplifiers), VCOs (voltage-controlled oscillators), mixers, PAs (power amplifiers), and filters, have remained the same. These blocks, however, have greatly increased in both size and complexity. The drive into lower cost technologies such as SiGe (silicon germanium) and CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) – with their associate lower v

Microchips With Multiple "Selves"

Stony Stevenson brings news from Rice University about designing integrated circuits with multiple distinct identities, which could be used in new types of hardware-based DRM, among other things. From the news release: "'With "n-variant" integrated circuits, it is possible to design portable media players that are inherently unique,' said Farinaz Koushanfar, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice and principal investigator on the project. 'New methods of digital rights management can be built upon such devices. For example, media files can be made such that they only run on a certain variant and cannot be played by another.' Koushanfar said content providers could also use n-variant chips to sell metered access to software, music or movies because the chips can be programmed to switch from one variant to anothe

Gerber Scientific Licenses 'Print to Cut Patent' Technology to Mimaki Engineering

PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gerber Scientific, Inc. (NYSE: GRB), a worldwide leader in integrated automation solutions, is pleased to announce that Mimaki's new CJV-30 series integrated printer cutter line released today incorporates licensed technology from Gerber Scientific.

'N-variant' microchips could protect intellectual property, enable new services

Rice University computer engineers have created a way to design integrated circuits that can contain many multiple selves. The chips can assume one identify or a subset of identities at a time, depending on the user's needs. New research shows that multiple "personalities" in an integrated circuit can be even a more powerful security mechanism that can be used for a variety of digital rights management tasks as well as for circuit optimization and customization without sacrificing the related power, delay and area metrics.
