April 30, 2008 - Designed to hasten repetitive 3D inspection duties, RCA combines automation capability of traditional CMM with mobility and part accessibility of articulated arm. Internal 7-axis articulated arm and external skeleton driven by electric motors create measuring robot that drives Metris MMD laser scanner along programmed motion path. Due to encoder technology and carbon fiber axes, RCA intrinsically offers true absolute measurement accuracy within inspection volume of 4.2 m dia.

Add the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) to the list of groups concerned about the privacy implications of widespread deep packet inspection (DPI) by ISPs. CIPPIC has filed an official complaint with Canada's Privacy Commissioner, Jennifer Stoddart, asking her office to investigate Bell Canada's use of DPI (and we're flattered to be quoted as an expert source in the complaint). In addition, the group would welcome a wider investigation into possible DPI use at cable operators Rogers and Shaw, as well.

An anonymous reader writes to tell us that Procera Networks is launching a new weapon on the deep packet inspection (DPI) front. At $800,000 these 80 Gbps tanks aren't going to be sitting in everyone's closet, but it could mean that more traffic shaping is on the way. "The PL10000 can handle up to 5 million subscribers and can track 48 million real-time data flows. That's certainly a potent piece of hardware, but larger ISPs will need more. That's why Procera designed the new machines with full support for synchronizing traffic flows where return traffic might be routed to a different PacketLogic machine. The machine receiving the return traffic can make the machine monitoring the outbound traffic aware that it sees the other half of a TCP/IP conversation, for example, giving the devices more accuracy than those which might only have acce

Several users direct my attention to a post by Canadian law professor Michael Geist. In it, Geist notes that his Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) has filed a privacy complaint (pdf) with the Privacy Commissioner claiming the use of deep packet inspection technology (DPI) is a privacy violation. DPI technology is now being used in everything from piracy filters to behavioral advertising, but in Bell Canada's case, they're using it to identify and throttle P2P traffic. But the group says Bell isn't informing customers:
