LinuxWorld 2008

I’m still trying to recover from all the fun (see Photo 1) I had at LinuxWorld in San Francisco last month. Some of the innovations coming out of the conference are astounding. I want to share specifically some important IBM innovations. While IBM didn’t win an award this year, some of the innovations it brought to the table were bold and exciting.

Luna Innovations Receives Funding for Brain Cancer Diagnostic Agent Using Nanotechnology

Luna Innovations Incorporated (NASDAQ:LUNA) announces an award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to improve the detection and diagnosis of brain tumors. Under this program, Luna will adapt its exclusive contrast agent technology using carbon nanospheres to produce an improved magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agent. This next-generation contrast agent will be designed to enhance tumor imaging and advance the diagnosis and treatment of this disease by directing nanomolecules to seek out specific biological targets, such as a glioblastoma tumor, one specific form of brain cancer.

Innovations That Could Change the Way You Manufacture: Self- Assembling Nanotechnology

On May 3, 2007, IBM announced the first-ever application of a breakthrough self-assembling nanotechnology to conventional chip manufacturing, borrowing a process from nature to build the next- generation computer chips. The natural pattern-creating process that forms seashells, snowflakes, and enamel on teeth has been harnessed by IBM to form trillions of holes to create insulating vacuums around the miles of nanoscale wires packed next to each other inside each computer chip.

Robots: Innovations in energy and data supply

igus® had several new developments in power and data supply for robotic equipment on show at the "Automatica" in Munich. The company has developed a new universal module called "Triflex RS", specifically for robotic applications in very cramped conditions. The multi-axis robotic energy chain "Triflex® RS" is always guided parallel and close to the robot arm, preventing a loop forming or cables becoming strained at the robot head. The low-profile module can be mounted directly to the existing fastening points on the robot. The moving end of energy chain is attached to the sixth axis with a mounting bracket. This system allows general movements, so no specific programming is required. Thanks to its compact design, the system can even be used if there is a valve cluster or distributor box on the third axis.
