xmedar writes "In his talks about the history of Apple, Woz has often recounted how the 1971 Esquire article 'Secrets of the Little Blue Box' set him on the road to phone phreaking. Now someone has obtained the FBI file of one of the phreaks, Joe Engressia (who later changed his name to Joybubbles), via Freedom of Information requests. The file reveals that Engressia was illegally wiretapped by the FBI and the phone company back in 1969. J. Edgar Hoover considered the blind college student a national security risk and wrote a memo about him to John Ehrlichman."

The MPAA has gone to extreme lengths to obtain information on illegal filesharing in an effort to shut down popular BitTorrent sites. This included paying $15,000 to a hacker to illegally retrieve information about TorrentSpy that ultimately assisted the MPAA in a court case leading to TorrentSpy’s demise. New information indicates that the MPAA was also paying this same hacker for information about Swedish BitTorrent tracker The Pirate Bay.

The BPI (who represent the Britsh music industry) have agreed on a plan with six leading UK ISPs, which will lead to thousands of net users suspected of illegally sharing music receiving warning letters. The six ISPs who have agreed to co-operate are BT, Orange, Virgin, Tiscali, BSkyB and The Carphone Warehouse. Customers of those ISPs who are alleged of sharing music illegally by the BPI can expect to find warning letters coming to their doors, though there doesn't appear to be any threat of legal action attached to such letters. Consultation has also been under way, which suggests among other things, that serial file sharers could have traffic management imposed on their connections. The BPI itself has gone as far as to suggest a three strike system that would see internet connections cut off for persistent pirates.
