Is Today's Web Still 'the Web'?

snydeq writes "Fatal Exception's Neil McAllister raises questions regarding the transforming nature of the Web now that Tim Berners-Lee's early vision has been supplanted by today's much more complex model. AJAX, Google Web Toolkit, Flash and Silverlight all have McAllister asking, 'Is [the Web] still the Web if you can't navigate directly to specific content? Is it still the Web if the content can't be indexed and searched? Is it still the Web if you can only view the application on certain clients or devices? Is it still the Web if you can't view source?' Such questions bely a much bigger question for Web developers, McAllister writes. If today's RIAs no longer resemble the 'Web,' then should we be shoehorning these apps into the Web's infrastructure, or is the problem that the client platforms simply aren't evolving fast enough to meet

Shape Shifting Robot Can Reassemble After Crashing Apart

It’s fairly certain that the Mars Polar Lander and the Beagle lander crash landed on Mars, never to be heard from again. Well, what if crash landing was no problem? What if a robotic spacecraft could just reassemble and fix itself if there was a mishap on the way to another planet’s surface? That type of science fiction is getting closer to reality. A group of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have developed a robot made of separate modules that can recognize each other and reassemble itself if they crash or get kicked apart. Maybe this could solve the problems of landing on Mars!

iPod touch 16GB

After spending a couple of months with the iPhone, it's hard to pick up the iPod touch and not think about what could have been. If only video looked as good on the touch as it does on the iPhone. If only Apple had compromised on the iPod's sleek lines to add a couple of unobtrusive volume buttons (or offered a headset that included remote controls). If only the whole iPod-as-PIM-concept had been thought through to the point where both contacts and calendar events could be entered on the iPod. If only I could use my old video accessories with my new iPod.

If I had a robot ...

So, if you had a robot, what would you want it to do for you? I'm sure you were just thinking about that very same question. If you are now asking yourself "How does this have anything to do with parenting?" let me ease your mind by blowing some smoke up your ... um, we parents are real busy people. The kind of people who need robots to do stuff for us.

What should I do with my old iPhone if I upgrade to 3G?

If you plan on upgrading to a new 3G iPhone, AppleInsider gives you some pointers on what to do if you want to give your old iPhone to another family member or a friend. Also, here is a informative video from AT&T on the subject.

Poll: If Apple releases a 3G iPhone next week, will you buy one?

Rumors are rampant that Apple will unveil a 3G iPhone at next week’s Worldwide Developer Conference. In our new Macsimum Poll, we want to know if you’ll buy one if, indeed, it is released. You can find the poll at the right hand side of the page, below the “Macsimum Opinion” section.

AOL to developers: We'll guarantee revenue if you use Platform-A

Fighting the common wisdom that it's tough to make money off a social-network application, AOL announced Monday that it will guarantee CPM revenues to developers on Facebook and Bebo's platforms if they opt to use its Platform-A ad technology. If a developer pulls in three unique ad impressions, AOL will pay an undisclosed flat fee.

Maybe Patent Trolls Wouldn't Be So Hated If We Called Them Patent Elves

I'm not a huge fan of the term "patent troll" which I agree can be unfairly negative, and without a clear definition often leads to problems. Recently, it seems that the term is most often applied to "non-practicing entities" making some people think that the patent system is mainly abused by those operations. That's a bit of misdirection. There's just as much, if not more, abuse of the patent system done by large companies. If there were actual proof (still waiting!) that the patent system actually did lead to more innovation, then I can easily understand why a non-practicing entity that just licensed its works could make sense. Unfortunately, most of the evidence suggests that patents don't actually lead to more innovation. In those cases, the only thing that non-practicing entities end up doing is hindering innovation.

MP3 Battery Life

If your MP3 player has a backlight, consider tweaking its options so that the backlight turns off after less time. Your MP3 players backlight can drain the battery quickly if it is on all the time. You can also turn the backlight off completely if you plan on being in well-lit areas where it is not needed. This simple step can earn you longer listening enjoyment.

Time Warner tries out metered Internet access

You are used to paying extra if you use up your cell phone minutes, but will you be willing to pay extra if your home computer goes over its Internet allowance? Time Warner Cable customers and, later, others may have to, if the company’s test of metered Internet access is successful.

Google's Protests Much Me Thinks

Google doesn't operate a network, if uses others. They take this attitude like all people who want a free ride. Verizon has a valid need to test an application on it's network before letting it on it. What if a new application causes network problems for Verizon's network and their Customers on that network. Will Google make Verizon whole if they lose business because of a snafu is loosed on their network by some rouge application. Give me a break. Will Google allow me to put applications on their servers without and testing> I doubt it would. I would put up such a fuss about their right to control their network, etc. Get a real life Google.

What I've Learned From Amazon.com

Have you ever purchased something from Amazon.com? If so, have you noticed their follow-up process? If I’ve bought something that was shipped through an outside vendor, and not through Amazon’s own facilities, I receive an e-mail within days of delivery asking me to rate the experience. I also get periodic e-mails from them with suggestions of items I might be interested in purchasing, based on my past buying habits. (This only freaks me out occasionally when I feel as if someone is actually watching me a bit too closely, but I tend to not let that bother me.) I’m also able to easily track the delivery of my purchases online and can even see which city the package is in and when it was loaded on the truck for delivery. Talk about a customized experience.

Pietersen tells England to raise their game

LONDON (Agencies): England must "move on to the next level" if they are going to compete with South Africa later this season, according to Kevin Pietersen. The South Africa-born batsman, who controversially turned his back on the Proteas in order to pursue an international career with England, believes the team must start to improve this season if they are to have a chance of wresting back the Ashes next year from Australia. England won the 2005 Ashes series on home soil 2-1 but were then overwhelmed 5-0 in Australia in 2006-07. "We are going to have to (move on to the next level), if we are going to beat South Africa," Pietersen told reporters at Lord's here on Monday. "That's going to be the toughest series we have had for a long time, apart from Australia.

Self-Healing Computers for Damaged Spaceships

What happens when a robotic space probe breaks down millions of miles away from the nearest spacecraft engineer? If there is a software bug, engineers can sometimes correct the problem by uploading new commands, but what if the computer hardware fails? If the hardware is controlling something critical like the thrusters or communications system, there isn't a lot mission control can do; the mission may be lost. Sometimes failed satellites can be recovered from orbit, but as there's no interplanetary towing service for missions to Mars. Can anything be done for damaged computer systems far from home? The answer might lie in a project called "Scalable Self-Configurable Architecture for Reusable Space Systems". But don't worry, machines aren't becoming self-aware, they're just learning how to fix themselves…

Activision Beats Street with Most Profitable Quarter Ever

narrative techniques, visual style, entertainment – but no factor is more influential to either industry than the importance of good titles. It’s a little like the line from the movie “Field of Dreams”: “If you build it they will come.” If you have good quality games, you draw audiences and build money making franchises. But if you make a dud? Revenues are sure to slump.

Custom design or templates?

That is the question that Foamers.net asks. Is it better to build your own custom design or use a template? Personally, I would have to give the wishy-washy answer of "it depends". If you're a good or great designer, then using a template wouldn't make sense. But what if you only have a few hours to get a site up and live? Using a pre-built template might make sense even for a pro designer in that case. Or if you're just starting out, using a template that you're allowed to modify might be a great way to learn Web design and new techniques that you weren't familiar with. But taking the time to build a site from scratch and doing all the testing is one of the best ways to learn HTML, CSS, and Web design.

PHOTOSHOP ONLINE PHOTO EDITING IS A GOOD BEGINNING

For a long time now, there has been an ongoing effort to fundamentally change the process of how we get things done on our computers. For the most part, if you want to get something done, you purchase a specific piece of software that's designed to do it. Want to write a letter or document for example? You buy a word processing application like Microsoft Word. Want to edit photographic images that you took using your digital camera or scanned in with your flatbed scanner? You buy a high-ticket application like Adobe's Photoshop if youre a professional editor. Or if you just want to do some basic editing with the option of doing some of the more sophisticated stuff automatically without having to crack a manual, you may buy the less-expensive, consumer-orientated Photoshop Elements.
