I've liked flames since I was a little kid growing up in Southern California during the '50s. I can't remember if the first time I ever saw something flamed was in one of my dad's custom car magazines, or on a hot-rod driving down the street. I do remember by the time I was in elementary school I was getting in trouble with my teachers for drawing flames on all of my school papers. When old people used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I told them a custom painter. By the time I was 14 I was custom painting all of my friend's bicycles in the neighborhood. By age 17, I had opened up a custom paint shop out of my parent's garage.

I feel exploited when a customer takes to much time to send me all the images, texts, videos, ideas etc that I need to complete the project. In the meantime, severals changes are asked from the client. A web site project could take 3 months! Eating peanut butter 3 months in a row is not very interesting (it’s juste an exemple of how poor I can be cause I wait for my money). A project could be finished in 2 short weeks (that never happened to me)… Even if I charge 40% of the total price at the beginning, I always feel that I’m more interested in finishing the project that the customer is. Sometimes I wonder if I’m in the good job in my life, but I prefer to be poor sometimes than having a boss. I have no excuses – I should have known better than to let my gadget envy get the better of me. But, with all the new way cool features added to the iPhone 3G and the fact that my existing AT&T plan allowed me to upgrade at $199, I decided to join the other crazies in line last Saturday afternoon and spend 2 hours to get my hands on a new iPhone 3G. I’ve spent more than 20 hours since then trying to get it to do what I needed it to do (i.e., synchronize with Outlook, stay charged up for more than a day, not die when I touch a button, etc.) and then I spent another 3 hours yesterday trying to return it. For more about why I now feel like a moron, read on…

I work in IT doing all kinds of stuff from networking to graphic design. I have lived in the DC area my whole life, I love it and hate it here, but I am not going to get into that. I've used iPhones and I have an iPod Touch. I love the interface, and I dig the device. Initially, I had to resist the urge to just buy an iPhone and deal with these problems, but I didn't, opting to get a Nokia N95 instead. A year has passed, and I've realized that I definitely made the right choice -- the limitations of the original iPhone (and the iPhone 2.0) are simply too numerous. DVD Shatters Inside Drive! What Next?

I was scared to death when I heard the loud shot-like noise that came from the DVD disk I was playing. Apparently the disk shattered inside the drive! The drive is wide open but it won’t close, and half the disc seems to be inside the drive somewhere. No other CD can go in at all. How do I take out the rest of the CD broken inside? Can someone please tell me how can I open the CD player inside the computer? I need to see inside so I can remove the rest of the disk. How did this thing happen? My computer is working fine. I mean I even turned it off and on again to see what could happen. Nothing. Can someone tell me if I should open the computer CPU case so I can remove the pieces? Thanks, Mary

Review: Par 72 Golf II for Palm OS

I've never been able to play golf, because of my eyesight - I just can't follow the flight of a golf ball as I hit it - which is why I loved to play Putt Putt as a child and spent many hours on the par 3 courses. But, I LOVE to play golf simulations and the likes, and Par 72 Golf II, by RESETgame, is no exception! I was actually surprised when I first downloaded and installed the game, as I didn't expect too much since the game is played on the small screen of my Palm Centro. Boy, was I surprised when I started the game for the first time! The graphics on this game are awesome! I'll go into more detail of the game graphics later.

It worked very well and met the client's requirements. It was extremely functional and I thought it didn't look bad either. But when I saw the new interface, not functionally different, just so much better looking, I was really blown away. My application had gone from useful to cool. (That might be a slight exaggeration, it was still just a database app but it sure looked cool to me.) Since then I've learned to primarily leave the user interface work to the experts in that arena, and I stick to the getting the functionality in place. But sometimes I don't have the luxury of a design team at my disposal.

I've taken longer than I hoped to read through all those responses and summarise them, but finally I'm done. As I said at the time, I'm *not* going to go into great gory detail about individuals or specific teams here and now. Many of the surveys include personal information and I promised to protect that. Instead, this is just a summary of the results. I'll be following up in more detail with various of the teams in the coming weeks. Staying Current In a Small Office Environment?

I tend to change phones pretty frequently, but for the past several months I have been using the HTC S620 (Excalibur). I have just loved the size and feel of it. I also use the iPhone here and there, but as a rule, I always seem to drift back to a phone that has a QWERTY keyboard. What can I say, I like buttons :o) And as another rule, it seems that no matter what phones I may use, I do eventually find myself picking up a Palm smartphone again...

ZoneAlarms Firewall

I am able to actually sync only once i re-install AS. So i can actually connect the pc and the axim but once i try to re-sync, the pc cannot connect to the pda. When i run the actual troubleshoot thing in windows, it tells mye about a ZooneAlarm security suite firewall that prevent me from connecting. I do not have this suite installed anymore, on my pc. I ran PCtool Registry mechanics to clena the registry... still does not work... i guess i am not an IT person but i will ike to get this thing going.... Got a few project that will make my life a whole lot easier.

Automated PDF File Integrity Checking?

Occasionally, when accessing a very old folder, I'll find one or two corrupted files. I would like to incorporate into my backup routine, a way of verifying the integrity of each file, so that I can immediately identify and replace with a backed-up version, any that might become corrupted. I'm not talking about verifying the integrity of the backup as a whole, instead, I want to periodically check the integrity of each individual PDF in the collection. "Years ago I already played a bit with Linux (It was Redhat 5.0 on my 386). At that time I thought the operating system wasn't yet ready for the desktop and after a while I reinstalled Windows. Things changed when Ubuntu 5.04 was released. This was the first time I really enjoyed Linux; the most important things worked, it was easy and it was just great! Because I liked Ubuntu so much, I decided to install it on my laptop too and also this worked very good. However, these days Ubuntu is way to heavy to run on my laptop. Because I wanted to have a fast system I tried to install Gentoo Linux; the installation took 3 days but I ended up with a very fast and responsible system. However, every time I had to install a program it took ages to compile the software.

Is Anyone Using the Google Web Toolkit?

eldavojohn writes "After seeing some applications from Google and participating in the Google Codejam (which seems to be built using the GWT), I kind of expected to see websites spring up left and right based off the GWT. Well, it's been a year and a half since they open sourced it and I have to admit that I am more than a little disappointed by its low profile in the UI community. I've been trolling their blog and have seen a few books out on it. But the one thing I'm not seeing is its use outside of Google. I've worked through the examples and tutorials at home and though I've been impressed with the speed, I am disturbed by the actual result — a whole ton of generated Javascript. But this is the first UI technology I've found where I can write in the native language of the server (Java) to generate and unit-test the UI code.

Newbie w/used PDA needs WLAN driver, has McAfee issues! Good stuff on this site....

I've had to try and hit the ground running because I really needed this PDA, so I'm trying to learn as I go, short on time. I don't need the Wi-Fi big time yet, but it WILL help down the road, SO: When I first acquired this Axim the WLAN utility was up and running (just not with my home network, I'll get to that.) But now status bar says the driver is not loaded. It's out of warranty, says previous owner, and the driver is not on list at support.dell.com. Anyone know where I can get the driver? I checked here, don't see it.
