Ashwell Prince and AB de Villiers ground England's weary bowlers down in a magnificent partnership of 179 on the second day at Headingley, as South Africa took a crucial 119-run lead. After scraping just three wickets in two days at Lord's, there was always a concern England's bowlers would be a little jaded. And so they were today, conceding 221 runs and stealing one measly wicket. They rarely looked like taking any more, either.

The first time South Africa faced Kevin Pietersen in an international series, they got on his case and he got three hundreds. Yesterday, at Lord's, they gave him the cold shoulder and he got another, proof that not all extroverts baulk at the silent treatment.

I just recently turned over my credit card debt of $50,000 to a debt management company which promises to have me debt-free in 30 months. I am paying $602 for the first six months and then $915 for 24 months (which goes into an account to pay the creditors).

Behold the Power of Potter. Time Warner (TWX) yesterday disclosed it won’t put out the new Harry Potter film, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” this November, as originally planned, and instead will make it a Summer 2009 release — specifically, for July 17 of next year. That’s going to hurt Electronic Arts (ERTS), which will lose a holiday ‘08 game title that represents about $150 million in revenue this year, according to analysts. The revenue and profit should come back the following year, though.

It's an issue that hurts game developers, but consider the effect of piracy on PC hardware manufacturers. Without a top-of-the-line graphics card and processor, it doesn't matter how many copies of Crysis you can pirate; you're not going to do much without the hardware to run it. On that note, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead floated an interesting theory that PC hardware manufacturers might not be the biggest opponent of the piracy scene, to say the least.

AT&T to sell $699 iPhone AT&T announced recently that they would be offering another version of the iPhone, one that comes without a contract. That sounds great, on the surface but just a bit deeper you discover that the no-contract phone has some very severe side effects. Namely, it hurts your wallet a lot as the phone runs $400 more than the same model phone with a contract. The $299 version of the iPhone without contract will become $699, a small fortune.

Back in April, we noted that some NY state politicians were trying to put in place a rather sneaky legal change that effectively would force Amazon to collect sales tax in New York, despite not having a physical presence there. The "trick" was to claim that if you had any affiliates in the state, you had a local presence. Affiliates, of course, can be nothing more than an advertiser. So, based on this change of law, effectively anyone who has an advertiser in NY is considered to have a local presence there and must collect sales tax. Both Amazon.com and Overstock have sued over this law, and Overstock has even gone so far as to cut off all NY affiliates in response (showing how the law probably hurts NYers a lot more than it helps them).
