It's kind of hard to believe that it's almost been a decade since HTML 4.01 was made official. However, it has taken browsers a while to recognise the standard, and this process continues today. I was pleased to see that the W3C has released the first draft of HTML 5 with its goal of creating Semantic HTML.

A loyal HTML CommsUpdate reader has brought to our attention the fact that CommsUpdate was arriving in his inbox unformatted—all the layout, images and links were garbled. Some investigation on our part has revealed that the latest version of Microsoft Outlook 2007 was released with a very different HTML rendering engine. This new engine is causing our CommsUpdate message (and many other HTML emails) to appear incorrectly.

"Rosalyn Hunter writes about using Composer as a stand-in word processor. I too, have used it in this fashion on OS X. I like it for various reasons. For instance, I'm quite familiar with it, as I've used it for website authoring numerous times. It creates HTML files. I've come to the conclusion that HTML is not a bad 'language' to use for a word processor, considering that it already allows for basic editing features--and then some. If it isn't obvious, Composer is an HTML editor that was part of the old Mozilla suite.

There are several innovations within the HTML 5 specification that will forever change the direction of the Web, and one in particular - WebSocket - that will revolutionize the way we develop and deploy Web applications. Until now, bi-directional browser communication has been an elusive goal of the Comet community, usually achieved with an assortment of hacks. However, with recent updates to the HTML 5 specification, developers can now use a full-duplex communications channel that operates over a single socket.

Just like spring cleaning a house, the html code of your web pages should get periodic cleaning as well. Over time, as changes and updates are made to a web page, the code can become littered with unnecessary clutter, slowing down page load times and hurting the efficiency of your web page. Cluttered html can also seriously impact your search engine ranking.

If you are a Blackberry (RIMM) user, you are familiar with the fact that emails containing HTML links (graphics) don’t display the graphics, but rather cause you to have to scroll down past that jibberish HTML text. It’s ugly and annoying, but those of us who are engineering-minded know the reason we have to suffer through this sub-optimal experience: bandwidth. By stripping each email of all of those colors and pictures, less bandwidth is utilized.

TwilightSentry writes "Ars Technica reports that a group of developers has created an Objective-C-like extension to JavaScript along with a class library mirroring Cocoa. They've used these to release an impressive demo app called 280 Slides. The article notes, 'Whereas SproutCore seeks to "embrace the platform" by giving a Cocoa-like development model for developers already using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to make a web app, Cappuccino and Objective-J take an entirely different approach. "Since Cappuccino runs entirely on the client, at run time, we're never actually generating HTML or CSS," says Boucher. "When you build an application in Cappuccino, you don't need to ever deal with HTML or CSS. All of your interface is designed in Objective-J and Cappuccino.
