HP today announced that its 2008 drupa trade show exhibit highlighting the company’s industry leadership, innovation and commitment to customer success, was the most successful drupa exhibit in HP’s history. Purchase contracts completed at the 14-day show were led by a significant number of HP Indigo digital press deals, in addition to sales of HP Scitex and HP Designjet large-format solutions as well as HP SmartStream workflow systems. drupa, which was held in Düsseldorf, Germany from May 29-June 11, is the world’s largest graphic arts exposition; the HP stand at drupa featured the industry’s largest digital colour portfolio and was the exposition’s third-largest stand overall.

HP and Sony Corporation have announced an agreement to create the next-generation Digital Audio Tape format -- the DAT 320 -- providing improved performance and capacity over existing DAT drives. HP and Sony are jointly developing the DAT or Digital Data Storage (DDS) standard, but will separately offer their own DAT 320 tape drives and cartridges. Similar to previous generations of DAT/DDS, the DAT 320 will be an open standard, which ensures partners can continue to obtain license rights. "The DAT 320 offers customers and partners a data protection solution that delivers unmatched performance and capacity," said Bob Wilson, vice president and general manager, Storage Platforms Division, HP. "Combining the expertise of two industry leaders that share a legacy of delivering proven DAT/DDS technology will result in a new standard for tape a

Everyone's abuzz about HP's decision to ship Microsoft's Live Search toolbar beginning with 2009 HP computers. But this is more than just a win for Microsoft Live Search. It's just as big of a win for Silverlight, Microsoft's contender to take on Adobe and remake how web applications interact with users. The HP agreement is the largest and first deal I'm aware of to distribute any application written in Silverlight.

justechn writes "I recently had the opportunity to see, first hand, HP's new 30-bit, 1 billion color LCD display. I have to say I am impressed. Not only is the HP Dreamcolor LP2480zx capable of displaying so much more than standard LCDs, but it considered a Color Critical display. This means if you work with videos or photos you can be guaranteed that what you see is what it is suppose to look like. With 6 built-in color spaces (NTSC, SMPTE, sRGB, Rec. 709, Adobe RGB and DCI), you can easily switch to the one that best suits your applications and process. At $3499, it is too expensive to be a consumer level LCD, but compared to other Color Critical displays (which can cost as much as $15,000 and $25,000) this is a real bargain. This display was a joint venture between HP and DreamWorks animation.

Were this review based on design and features alone the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC would be walking away with a Recommended Award: that's a fact. It has a superb keyboard and a chassis that's a cut above both the Eee PC and anything we've seen, released or otherwise. Unfortunately for HP there's a lot more to it than this and the Mini-Note struggles to match even the modest exploits of the Eee PC. Its 1.2GHz VIA CPU chugs when shown any kind of video and battery life is poor, managing even less than the none too impressive longevity offered by Asus' machine. If and when HP updates this with something faster, be it Intel's Atom or a new generation VIA CPU, then it could be onto a real winner.
