Survival-Horror Genre Going Extinct?

Destructoid is running an opinion piece looking at the state of the survival-horror genre in games, suggesting that the way it has developed over the past several years has been detrimental to its own future. "During the nineties, horror games were all the rage, with Resident Evil and Silent Hill using the negative aspects of other games to an advantage. While fixed camera angles, dodgy controls and clunky combat were seen as problematic in most games, the traditional survival horror took them as a positive boon. A seemingly less demanding public ate up these games with a big spoon, overlooking glaring faults in favor of videogames that could be genuinely terrifying." The Guardian's Games Blog has posted a response downplaying the decline of the genre, looking forward to Ubisoft's upcoming I Am Alive and wondering if independent game deve

Dead Space Highlights Disparity Between Plot and Gameplay

Gamasutra is running an opinion piece praising recent horror-action game Dead Space for its pacing and gameplay while simultaneously criticizing the plot and the attempts to scare the player. Quoting: "What Dead Space is, is carefully and stylishly unoriginal. You'll love playing it, but when you aren't playing it, it's hard to say what's so great about it. It has some really great set pieces, some sweet effects, solid gameplay, an amazing interface and that's all. Anything and everything having to do with dialogue and story comes off as rote. ... You get the feeling the developer are trying very hard, though. When I see a dark shape in the distance, which turns and disappears, I don't get scared. I know he'll pop out of a vent later! Likewise, when I find a scientist who promptly slits her throat because of the horror, I just check for a

Dead Space for Xbox 360 & PS3

The interactive entertainment industry has witnessed a lot in all respective genres over these years, which isn't really a bad trend if you consider the number of choices the gamer of today has across platforms. Even though abundance has shined over almost every genre, those scintillating, incredibly intense and spine-chilling horror titles have always been hard to come by. Sure, we've got legends such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and even Siren, but that's pretty much everything that the genre has had to offer to the new seekers thus far. When Dead Space was first announced by EA, it was pitted to bring classic horror and the “from space, no one can hear you scream” kinda atmosphere, and gladly, that's exactly what Redwood Shores have managed to deliver-a superlative, dark entertainer, and most certainly, one of the best survival h

Hardware Is Cheap, Programmers Are Expensive

Sportsqs points out a story at Coding Horror which begins: "Given the rapid advance of Moore's Law, when does it make sense to throw hardware at a programming problem? As a general rule, I'd say almost always. Consider the average programmer salary here in the US. You probably have several of these programmer guys or gals on staff. I can't speak to how much your servers may cost, or how many of them you may need. Or, maybe you don't need any — perhaps all your code executes on your users' hardware, which is an entirely different scenario. Obviously, situations vary. But even the most rudimentary math will tell you that it'd take a massive hardware outlay to equal the yearly costs of even a modest five person programming team."
