Taking Back Sunday, 'Timberwolves at New Jersey': Free MP3 of the Day

From the Free MP3 archive* On new tracks like "Liar (It Takes One To Know One)," the punk/pop heroes continue to evolve their means of crossing alternative leanings with arena-ready hooks. Here, their slight--and welcome--subversions include moodier prod on guitars and genuinely achy vocals.

The Dutchess And The Duke, 'Reservoir Park': Free MP3 of the Day

"Lo-fi" music was conceived as a stripping away of studio pretense. Often, it's quite the opposite, but the original idea is intact in this Seattle duo's work. Bumbling percussion, ragged vocals and rough hooks channel both modern anti-folk and early Stones and Kinks.

Altec Lansing intros high-featured Bluetooth headset...

Altec Lansing recently introduced its BackBeat 903/6 Bluetooth headset at the currently ongoing Macworld Expo and will also display them at the CES show later this week. The headset, developed with cooperation from Bluetooth earpiece maker Plantronics, stays in place thanks to the use of both ear canal-sealing ear buds and ear hooks. Plantronics' dual-mic AudioIQ technology is incorporated into the headset to increase call quality and raise call volume depending on ambient noise levels.

Electric Owls, 'Magic Show': Free MP3 of the Day

With his band The Comas on hiatus, Andy Herod's self-produced new project, Electric Owls embarks on an exploration of musical experimentation whilst dwelling on the distinctly dark and cryptic with the release of the Magic Show EP. Aptly titled, the four tracks propagate the mystical spirit of Halloween with many macabre references in songs such as "Cannibal Superstar" and "Darken Me", both lyrically dredging up feelings of death and dethronement put against a backdrop of slightly offbeat--yet melodic--pop hooks and intertwining harmonies. Less heavy songs also appear on the release, such as the unusually jaunty and whimsical title track, evoking surrealistic images and a dreamy musical style equal parts nocturnal and charged--perhaps better identifiable as an electric owl.
