Disney busts out of iTunes ghetto, tries on-demand experiment

As a child of the early 1980s, I had to reconcile two quite different images of the Disney brand. On the one hand, there was the much beloved taped-from-TV copy of Robin Hood featuring Sir Hiss and some Roger Miller songs; on the other hand, there was Disney's practice of stuffing its films back into "the vault" if you didn't buy them when Disney said you should. The "vault" seemed like a low sort of thing to do, but then "Papa" Michael Eisner would walk into my TV set on Saturday nights to introduce a new episode of Wonderful World of Disney (from which the Robin Hood tape had been made), and all was forgiven.

Under the Hood: Oracle Berkeley DB XML

Storing an XML document in a relational database has its limitations. XML's hierarchical structures of elements and element attributes do not necessarily map well to relational database structures, which is where an embeddable (non-relational) XML database has its advantages over a relational database.

CAR HORN PLAYS MP3

Automobiles are more like computers on wheels these days and the technology you find underneath the hood now bears little resemblance to the mechanical technology that moved our cars in the last century. Gone are the carburetors that mixed the air and fuel, the distributors and rotors that managed the electrical impulses to fire the spark plugs are virtually nonexistent. The mechanical gears and springs that made the speedometer, tachometer and other indicator gauges have vanished, replaced by computer technology that does the job a lot better by being far more accurate, visible and reliable. Heck even the car key has become a computerized device offering a lot more security as well as remote operability. Still there will always be the nostalgic yearning for the older days when you still had a chance of knowing what was going on when

Our iPhone 2.0 wishlist

Fans of Apple's iPhone are suffering from the worst case of Stockholm Syndrome the tech world has ever seen. If Nokia or Sony Ericsson dared to hood-wink us by slapping an AU$800 price tag on a 2G phone, with a 2-megapixel camera and no MMS, they'd be run out of town by a pitchfork-wielding mob.

Addiction to video games a growing concern

Concern is spreading among parents and mental-health professionals that the exploding popularity of computer and video games has a deeper dark side than simple couch-potato hood. Studies show that 92 percent of children under age 18 play regularly. According to the Media Research Lab at Iowa State University, about 8.5 percent of 8-to-18-year-old gamers can be considered pathologically addicted, and nearly one quarter of young people admit they’ve felt addicted. Little wonder: in February, a team at Stanford University School of Medicine showed that areas of the brain responsible for generating feelings of addiction and reward are activated during game play.
