NASA has long had what is probably the most effective contract history program in the federal government, producing excellent first drafts of scholarship on various space subjects that provide a solid foundation for those who follow. The agency gives its contract historians access to documents and NASA officials, and virtually unlimited independence in the pursuit of the story. A History of the Kennedy Space Center, by Kenneth Lipartito and Orville Butler, is a very good addition to this canon, telling the story of the development of the launch facility at Cape Canaveral, which has not only been vital to the nation’s space program, but has had a major impact on the economy and social development of the state of Florida.

Anytime a new attempt is made to explain Canadian history to Canadians, it is worth careful consideration. Mavericks, the new permanent exhibit at the Glenbow museum in Calgary, is no exception. Based on Anita Van Herk’s popular history of the same name, the exhibit has opened this summer, and features nine thematically organized galleries, which can be viewed in any order, by themselves or with the help of a multimedia presentation available on palm pilots. It is a creative way of telling the story, and despite a rampant spirit of boosterism for Canada’s Texas, it is surprisingly successful in creating an experience for visitors that is fresh, fun, and often historically relevant, if not always historically accurate.

Phil Sp. writes "Government Attic, those fine investigative pack rats, have outdone themselves this time. Just posted: a declassified NSA document entitled A History of Communications Security, Volumes I and II: The David G. Boak Lectures [PDF] from 1973 and 1981. This is an absolutely fascinating look into how the NSA viewed (views?) communications security and touches on all sorts of topics, including public key crypto, economics, DES, tamper-resistance, etc. It was seemingly from a collection of lectures to new employees. The first 85 pages are heavily redacted but the remaining 80 or so are largely intact. It even concludes with a cryptogram puzzle for the reader!"
