PlayStation 3 switching to 65nm technology...

The PlayStation 3 is already using some 65nm manufacturing, says Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai. The technology has actually been used in the PS3's Cell processor since the last holiday season, Hirai confirms, and the full switch from 90 to 65nm should be complete by the fall, when the RSX graphics processor will make the leap. Manufacturing of new RSX chips has already begun, but the company is waiting until later this year to install them.

Sony to Start U.S. Movie Service for PS3

Sony says it will start a movie download service for its PlayStation 3 home console this summer in the United States. Kazuo Hirai, who heads Sony Corp.'s video game unit, said the service will be offered in Japan and Europe at later dates, although details won't be available until next month. Hirai said the company will strengthen its network services and further cut costs to achieve profitability in the Sony gaming business in the current fiscal year ending March 2009.

Sony announces Phil Harrison's successor: Shuhei Yoshida

It's hard to fill the shoes of Phil Harrison. He worked with four PlayStation systems, was often the very-public face of Sony's gaming efforts, and had the immense job of keeping Sony Entertainment Worldwide Studios flowing in a cohesive, effective manner. It was announced in February that Harrison would be stepping down from his position as President of Sony Entertainment Worldwide Studios, his role being temporarily filled by Kazuo Hirai, the President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. It was obvious that Hirai couldn't handle both jobs for long, and Harrison's successor has finally been announced: Shuhei Yoshida will be the new President of SCE Worldwide Studios.

PlayStation 3 to Offer News, Weather, & Media Download Services

Sony’s Computer Entertainment president Kazuo Hirai announced that they will expand the abilities of the PlayStation 3 by launching “Life with PlayStation,” a news and weather service, and a media download service for movies, music, and TV programs. Sony has always maintained that the PS3 is more than a game console and this appears to be another step in the “entertainment hub” direction.

Sony sets final sales target

Sony's console chief executive Kaz Hirai has ambitions, and big ones: he's set a target of selling 150 million PlayStation 3's (long-term), aiming to surpass the PS2's record of 140m (the PS1 reached 102m). Currently, the console is barely one-tenth of the way there, with sales of 12.85m as of March. But Sony, bless their little hearts, are willing to face the cold:
