It can be somewhat difficult to find effective ways to protect pages and images on websites. Many beginning designers like to hide their pages and think that if they don't link to the pages, they won't be found by search engines or competitors. But search engine spiders are very good at finding things on Web pages unless you either block the spiders from indexing it with a robots.txt file or you prevent access to it with an htaccess file or other password protection scheme.

Sniper223 notes a PC World article on a new kind of rootkit recently developed by researchers, which will be demoed at Black Hat in August. The rootkit runs in System Management Mode, a longtime feature of x86 architecture that allows for code to run in a locked part of memory. It is said to be harder to detect, potentially, than VM-based rootkits. The article notes that the technique is unlikely to lead to widespread expoitation: "Being divorced from the operating system makes the SMM rootkit stealthy, but it also means that hackers have to write this driver code expressly for the system they are attacking."

Nintendo Wii Fanboy reports that Sega sent out a press release announcing their upcoming releases, hiding a bit of news among the tentative release dates. In the blurb about Gearbox's new version of Samba de Amigo, Sega confirmed the existence of "over 40 songs and additional downloadable tunes." Will they cost money? Probably! Given the choice between getting money and not getting money, even Sega probably knows what to choose.

As was widely expected, it turns out that all the hype and fuss about the iPhone costing $199 was really hiding the key facts: it's only that price if you're buying it in the US, along with a long term contract with high service fees. At first it actually appeared as though the only possible way you could buy the phone was with one of those contracts. However, AT&T has now admitted that it will indeed sell the phone without a contract, but the price will be $599. While some unlockers may find that worthwhile, it's probably a bit much for most. Still, this once again highlights how Apple's predictions that it was going to change the economics of the mobile phone industry haven't actually been true. There are plenty of mobile phones out there that you can buy subsidized under a contract, which cost 3x as much without a contract.

Although Transformers movie mania has long past, the sweet geek pleasure of the mega-hit Iron Man has sharpened our robo-lens. Hiding in plain sight is the ultimate iPod dock that serves as a mini-speaker system as well as a bona fide Transformer toy (specifically, Optimus Prime Convoy, one of the good guys). Sure it's kind of retro, but true Transformers fans know that this kind of stuff never gets old. Originally offered by Takara Tomy, buried on its Japanese site, you can now pick one up for $145 here.

It kind of looks like a Zen Stone, and it is certainly a far cry from the Zen X-Fi, but this little MP3 player has been discovered hiding on Creative's Hong Kong site. Apparently, the 4GB Zen Krystal is designed to be a sports player with a pedometer that functions similarly to the Nike+ line. It also includes games like "Hurdle Race, Catch & Dodge and Dice Roll" as well as a Blue 0.7" OLED, FM radio, and 10 hours of playback. A price and a release date have not been made available.
