The latest addition to the hanging boat display at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall is Flook, the first ever Heron dinghy designed in 1950 by Jack Holt. She was hung from the museum’s ceiling earlier this month. The Heron was a popular beginners' boat in the 1950s, and served a great number of people taking to the water after the Second World War. Boats like the Heron used the plywoods and glues developed for aircraft in the war to great effect, creating light, stiff hulls at a low price. The Heron remains popular today, with international ownership estimated by the museum to be in excess of 10,000.

Anonymous writes "With the releases of Fedora 9, Hardy Heron and OpenSuSE 11 so close together, it's looking more than ever like an evolution to a common interface for major Linux distributions. Here's a compilation of screen shots and descriptions that make it appear to be the case. Would this be a good thing or a bad thing?" There are plenty of other options out there, of course, even considering only Linux distros that are based on Gnome and KDE, and plenty of wilder (or at least less common) desktops to choose from besides.

"I love Twitter but when I use my Linux laptop (Ubuntu running Hardy Heron) I don't have many native options for Twitter clients. The preferred native client appears to be Twitux. Though the nascent client is a little primitive for me. Another popular choice is gTwitter though in my experience it's only been marginally better.

Linux.com (who shares corporate overlords with Slashdot) is reporting that gNewSense has gone 2.0. For the uninitiated gNewSense is a stripped down version of Ubuntu's Hardy Heron for the free software purist. Removing over 100 pieces of proprietary code and firmware, gNewSense offers a user the ability to run an OS where everything is able to be studied, changed, and redistributed. "gNewSense is a great alternative to Gobuntu, the Canonical-sponsored free derivative of Ubuntu. According to its wiki page, the 8.04 version of Gobuntu hasn't been released due to a less-than-optimal reaction from the community. Gobuntu used the same repositories as Ubuntu, and the Ubuntu live CD can achieve the same installation as Gobuntu by merely selecting the free-software-only option in the installer (press F6 twice at the boot menu).
