A fluky Roger Johnson effort and a penalty from Michael Chopra helped Cardiff City to a comfortable 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. The game won¿t live long in the memory but, after an even first-half, the Bluebirds did enough after the break to deserve all three points.

PS3.jpgOf Sony's (SNE) many mistakes with the PS3 -- too high a price, reliance on Blu-ray as a selling point, few exclusive titles -- this might be the most embarrassing: Sony basically helped underwrite a lot of the research that its arch-rival, Microsoft (MSFT), used in the Xbox 360.

Switzerland’s consumer price index fell 0.7% in November despite expectations for a 0.2% decline, which helped to lower the annual rate of inflation to 1.5% from 2.6% in October. The breakdown of the report showed that energy prices dropped another 8.2% following a 1.5% drop in the previous month, while transportation costs fell 3.5% during the month. Falling oil prices have certainly helped to taper the upside risks for inflation throughout the global economy, and as price pressures alleviate, the Swiss National Bank may have room to ease policy further as they expect economic activity to deteriorate throughout the next year.

imageMicrosoft’s Massive in-game ad division has a new leader: former Xbox Live GM JJ Richards. As ClickZ notes, Richards is a natural fit for the new position—he helped initiate MSFT’s acquisition of Massive in 2006, and has helped grow Xbox Live into a viable community (not to mention a steady revenue source for MSFT). Richards takes the helm from Cory Van Arsdale as Massive hosts its first game advertising upfront—a chance to show off its successful campaigns and lure both advertisers and game publishers in for new deals. Massive announced two such deals with Activision (NSDQ: ATVI) Blizzard today:

Gulam Bodi's 65 ensured a smooth win for Titans who chased down 188 to beat Dolphins in Benoni. Dolphins' innings never really recovered from the position of 3 for 10 which Basheeru-Deen Walters (2 for 26) helped put them in, although Daryn Smit helped achieve a score of some respectability with a 52 from 66. Roelof van der Merwe's slow-left-arm earned him 3 for 30 from his nine overs. Titans stumbled in their reply to 14 for 2 but Bodi and Martin van Jaarsveld (45 from 64) gave their innings substance while Farhaan Behardien cracked 29 from 38 to complete a three-wicket win

Rob Spengler writes "Last.FM co-founder Richard Jones says the biggest asset the company owns is 'hundreds of terabytes of user data.' Jones adds, '... playing with that data is one of the most fun things about working at the company.' Last.FM, for those who have been living on Mars for the last two years, is the largest online radio outlet, with millions of listeners per day. The company surpassed Pandora and others largely due to its unique datamining features: 'Audioscrobbler,' the company's song/artist naming algorithm, can correctly determine a track even with tens of thousands of false entries. Jones says sitting on that much data has even helped police: 'thieves listening to music on an Audioscrobbler-powered media player have helped police in the US, UK, and other countries track down users' stolen laptops.

In 2001, Sony partnered with Toshiba and IBM to create the Cell processor for its upcoming PlayStation 3 console. Sony wanted a brand new processing architecture, so the three companies committed themselves to spending $400 million over five years to design the Cell, not to mention the additional costs of building two production facilities. The target launch date for the PlayStation 3 was Christmas 2005. Little did Sony know that in late 2002, IBM would be approached by Microsoft to create the chip for its upcoming rival game console, the soon-to-be-named Xbox 360. IBM's Adam Bennett showed Microsoft the specs for the Cell processor and told IBM to create a chip based around that core. The main benefit? Microsoft avoided a bulk of the R&D cost it would have otherwise had to spend.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- A dog weighing more than 120 pounds survived being frozen to a sidewalk overnight, probably because he was insulated by layers of fat, authorities said. The Sheboygan County Humane Society says the "morbidly obese" dog, an aging border collie mix named Jiffy, froze to the sidewalk when he was left out overnight Wednesday. Shelter manager Carey Payne says few dogs could survive the single-digit temperatures, and it was probably the fat that made the difference.
