Retreating in Utrecht: Fortis investors hear of bank's new plans

Shareholders of now dismantled and partly nationalized Belgian-Dutch bank Fortis booed directors yesterday at the first general meeting in the Netherlands since the company foundered last month. The gathering in the central Dutch city of Utrecht brought together several hundred shareholders representing 21% of the company's capital to formalize the group's dismemberment and elect a new board of directors. The tension was palpable as shareholders grilled executives over "bad management." "Will you finally recognize your mistakes and admit that the board reduced the bank to nothing and misled the shareholders?" one investor demanded to know of the panel of executives. Fortis board member Jan-Michiel Hessels opened the session by saying that "nobody here is satisfied" with the course of events.
