Health Buzz: Google Health and Other Health News

Google Health—which offers the ability to manage and store medical records and health information online— launched publicly yesterday, according to the official Google blog. The goal is to allow users to take their medical records with them, whether they're traveling or simply switching doctors or pharmacies. Google's site partners include Walgreens, Quest Diagnostics, and other health-related companies.

Google Health Opens To the Public

Several readers noted that the limited pilot test of Google Health has ended, and Google is now offering the service to the public at large. Google Health allows patients to enter health information, such as conditions and prescriptions, find related medical information, and share information with their health care providers (at the patient's request). Information may be entered manually or imported from partnered health care providers. The service is offered free of charge, and Google won't be including advertising. The WSJ and the NYTimes provide details about Google's numerous health partners.

Privacy and Public Health at Risk: Public Health Confidentiality in the Digital Age

Public health agencies increasingly use electronic means to acquire, use, maintain, and store personal health information. Electronic data formats can improve performance of core public health functions, but potentially threaten privacy because they can be easily duplicated and transmitted to unauthorized people. Although such security breaches do occur, electronic data can be better secured than paper records, because authentication, authorization, auditing, and accountability can be facilitated. Public health professionals should collaborate with law and information technology colleagues to assess possible threats, implement updated policies, train staff, and develop preventive engineering measures to protect information.

AMA diagnoses Google Health reports

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has advised that the privacy of medical records held overseas is not guaranteed. Google says it has no plans to launch its Google Health service in Australia, but Australians can use the portal to store medical information. The purpose of the platform is to improve assess to health records as patients move between health care providers, with information stored including age, height, medications, allergies, test results and medical procedures. AMA's council of general practice chairman, Rodney Pearce, said doctors will treat information held on sites such as Google Health in the same manner as hand-written notes by patients. The AMA has expressed a preference for a national electronic health record, such as the one being developed by the NEHTA
