Red Hat increases service levels, reduces customer costs

Red Hat is introducing a new software maintenance service called Extended Update Support. It allows a customer with a large mission-critical deployment to reduce server administration and management costs by standardizing on a single update release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux for up to 18 months -- all while preserving stability and data security. Each major version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5) is supported for seven years. During this lifecycle, critical security fixes and production-stopping bug fixes are released as asynchronous advisories. In addition, Red Hat releases updates (such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.1 or 5.2) about twice per year. These releases contain a roll-up of all the important bug fixes and security patches released prior to the update.

Red Hat Spacewalk Expands Linux Management

IconRed Hat's Spacewalk project is getting into place. The project wants to feed development of the Red Hat Network Satellite product for system management. Satellite is a critical tool for Red Hat users as it provides management capabilities for multiple servers for software deployment and updates. Almost six months ago, Red Hat kicked off the Spacewalk project in an effort to create an open source version of Network Satellite that would serve as the upstream project that drives development. According to Red Hat executives, Spacewalk is still in the process of getting aligned with Network Satellite releases in terms of the development model. As well, Spacewalk is now gearing up to replace Network Satellite's proprietary Oracle database backend with an open source database.

Alan Cox is moving on from Red Hat

I will be departing Red Hat mid January having handed in my notice. I'm not going to be spending more time with the family, gardening[1] or other such wonderous things. I'm leaving on good terms and strongly supporting the work Red Hat is doing. I've been at Red Hat for ten years as contractor and employee and now have an opportunity to get even closer to the low level stuff that interests me most. Barring last minute glitches I shall be relocating to Intel (logically at least, physically I'm not going anywhere) and still be working on Linux and free software stuff. I know some people will wonder what it means for Red Hat engineering. Red Hat has a solid, world class, engineering team and my departure will have no effect on their ability to deliver.

Alan Cox Leaves Red Hat

ruphus13 writes "Alan Cox — one of the lead Linux kernel developers at Red Hat — is leaving the company after 10 years and is heading to Intel, where he can focus on more low-level development tasks. There is speculation if this is indicative of a shift to a more 'application-centric' vision at Red Hat. From the article: 'Red Hat is integrating more application related, user- and enterprise-centric tools into its well-established "low-level," "core" development and support tools. It'd be more worrisome if Red Hat neglected to strike out in this direction. Cox was with Red Hat for ten years, and regardless of any suspected change of course within the company, that's a fair amount of time.'"

Red Hat Extends Enterprise Linux Support

IconRight after the recent news that Red Hat is offering a new subscription for mission critical deployment that extends the life-cycle for up to 10 years, Red Hat has announced another, that allows the customers to stay in a single point release for up to eighteen months and continue to get updates and support that point release. Matt Asay writes: "Red Hat has set the standard for world class software support, consistently earning top marks with CIOs for its efforts. On Thursday, however, Red Hat outdid itself, introducing a new product support plan called Extended Update Support. In a nutshell, Extended Update Support enables customers to run their mission-critical systems for longer stretches of time without having to take production systems offline to update them.

Red Hat Devises New Maintenance Service

Red Hat has started a new software maintenance service called Extended Update Support (EUS) that's supposed to save bigger customers money if they standardize on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux environment, like, say, RHEL 5.2, for up to 18 months, which, Red Hat says, is three times longer than the industry norm.

Want to Wear a Cowboy Hat in Gears of War 2?

Two days ago, Gears of War 2 level designer Dave Nash introduced players to the "dizzy hat" Easter egg, which appeared to equip all characters with Dizzy's cowboy hat. After a day of intense searching and claims of PhotoShop, Gears of War 2 forum member Grindhouse solved the riddle and uncovered how to unlock the hats. The best part? Unlocking the hats results in giant-hat-wearing corpsers who yell demonic "Yee-haws".
