iD CEO: Hardware Makers Condone Piracy

It's an issue that hurts game developers, but consider the effect of piracy on PC hardware manufacturers. Without a top-of-the-line graphics card and processor, it doesn't matter how many copies of Crysis you can pirate; you're not going to do much without the hardware to run it. On that note, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead floated an interesting theory that PC hardware manufacturers might not be the biggest opponent of the piracy scene, to say the least.

Hubble hardware failure pushes back service mission

A hardware failure on the Hubble Space Telescope has compelled NASA to revise its plans for a service mission originally scheduled for this autumn. The mission will now include the replacement of the failed hardware, but revisions to the schedule and the new training involved mean that the liftoff of the shuttle bound for the Hubble will not take place this year.

Japanese Hardware: 360 Lead Narrows Over PS3

Japanese Hardware: 360 Lead Narrows Over PS3 The Xbox 360 is still outselling the PlayStation 3 in Japan, but its lead has narrowed further to just over 1,000 units. Although software sales were relatively healthy, this week has seen some of the lowest overall hardware sales this year.

Sega Returning to the Hardware Biz with Vision PMP for 2009

Sony's PSP is currently getting its butt handed to it by the Nintendo DS, but don't tell that to Sega. With its upcoming Sega Vision PMP, due out in the UK sometime in 2009, the former hardware company-turned-sub par software maker is hoping to take on the jack-of-all-trades portable market. The prognosis for such a device is OK, but then again how could it not be? After all, this is the company that brought us the 32X, Saturn, and the Dreamcast—the only direction any Sega hardware offering could go from this point forward is up.

OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide

Martin Ecker writes "Mobile phones and other embedded devices are getting more and more powerful each year. The availability of dedicated hardware for 3D rendering is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, and the latest mobile phones come with 3D hardware acceleration that rivals the power of desktop graphics hardware. OpenGL ES 2.0 is the latest version of a cross-platform, low-level graphics API to utilize these new resources available in embedded devices. The OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide published by Addison-Wesley Publishing aims to help the reader make use of the full power of OpenGL ES 2.0 to create interesting 3D applications." Keep reading for the rest of Martin's review.

Lynux Works: C-to-FPGA tools integrate with BlueCat Linux OS

LynuxWorks and Impulse Accelerated Technologies have announced technical collaboration, libraries and reference examples combining the Impulse C-to-FPGA tools with LynuxWorks BlueCat operating system. The Impulse development environment increases productivity by providing C-language compilation, optimization and hardware generation for FPGAs. The tools also handle the hardware interconnections between embedded PowerPC and MicroBlaze processors and custom C-language hardware accelerators.

Virtutech(TM) Presents at MontaVista Vision 2008 Embedded Linux Developers Conference

SAN JOSE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Virtutech, Inc., the leader in virtualized software development (VSD) solutions for electronic systems, today announced that principal technology specialist Ross Dickson will lead a discussion entitled "Using Virtual Hardware to Help Embedded Software Development" during the MontaVista Vision 2008 Embedded Linux Developers Conference, October 1-3, 2008 at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco, Calif. The presentation will focus on how virtual platforms make it possible to analyze the performance of code in a way not possible on physical hardware. Dickson will present real-world examples of how virtual platforms enable software development well in advance of actual physical hardware prototype availability, thereby saving time to market and allowing faster edit-compile-debug cycles.

Hardware Security Requirements for Embedded Encryption Key Storage

As the sophistication of global competitors and IP thieves in countries with weak IP protections increases, there exists an increased need for enhanced physical security for sensitive security information such as encryption keys. With hardware security as one of the new primary requirements for many, if not most, consumer SOC architectures, new questions are being asked of various memory technologies.

Split-tunnel VPN hardware client configuration for Cisco EzVPN

Previously in our series on building router-based VPN gateways, we learned how to support topologies by building a gateway with Cisco EzVPN gateway to support a network-to-network IPsec VPN. We also covered the hardware client configuration for full-crypto peering on the EzVPN gateway. Now we'll move on to split-tunnel client configuration, which is more efficient and secure, but a bit more complex.
