Sony Ericsson have announced that they have joined the Open Handset Alliance, what’s more, the company has also announced they’re developing a handset, which will run on Google’s open-source Android OS, first seen in HTC’s G1 handset. Led by Google, the Open Handset Alliance is a group, now consisting of forty seven technology and mobile companies, who aim to develop open standards, for mobile devices. To add to that, it was announced fourteen new companies have joined the OHA. Members include ARM, ASUSTek, Atheros Communications, Garmin International, Toshiba, and Vodafone. INTERFAX-CHINA - Mobile handset design companies in China are cutting their research and development of TD-SCDMA due to the possibility that China Mobile could reduce its TD-SCDMA handset purchases in 2009, industry insiders told Interfax recently. "Our company has been cutting jobs in its TD-SCDMA handset R & D team and has recently merged the team with the CDMA handset R & D team to form a new 3G mobile handset R & D division," a member of the R & D staff of mobile phone design company Shanghai Simcom, who wished not to be identified, told Interfax on Dec. 29. Shanghai Simcom, which is a subsidiary of SIM Technology Group Ltd., was among the first batch of companies to start designing TD-SCDMA mobile phones.

According to the Taiwan-based Industrial Technology Intelligence Services (ITIS), total handset shipments in China in the third quarter of 2008 had an increase of 6% compared to the same period of 2007, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) reported. Shipments of first-tier handset vendors dropped 1.3% in China, while shipments from local handset vendors, many of whom adopt MediaTek's platforms, had a growth of 32.4%.

Blurred images of an 8-megapixel Samsung handset that is expected to be offered at wireless provider T-Mobile have surfaced on Monday, all but confirming an earlier report.
