This paper considers the problem of translating XML queries into SQL when XML documents have been stored in an RDBMS using a schema-based relational decomposition. Surprisingly, there is no published XML-to-SQL query translation algorithm for this scenario that handles recursive XML schemas. This paper presents a generic algorithm to translate path expression queries into SQL in the presence of recursion in the schema and queries. This algorithm handles a general class of XML-to-Relational mappings, which includes all techniques proposed in literature.

joabj writes "Virginia Tech researchers have found that the performance of programs running on multicore processors can vary from server to server, and even from core to core. Factors such as which core handles interrupts, or which cache holds the needed data can change from run to run. Such resources tend to be allocated arbitrarily now. As a result, program execution times can vary up to 10 percent. The good news is that the VT researchers are working on a library that will recognize inefficient behavior and rearrange things in a more timely fashion." Here is the paper, Asymmetric Interactions in Symmetric Multicore Systems: Analysis, Enhancements and Evaluation (PDF).

The solution to the frozen 30GB Zune problem is to let the device run flat and then recharge it. Apparently the pause was caused by a date programming error: ie "a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year." Whether that was Microsoft's fault or the chip supplier's remains to be seen, but I'd suspect Microsoft on the gorunds that no other players appear to have had the same problem. On the good side, there seemed to be far more original Zune users than many people suspected. Pity Microsoft had to upset them to make them visible.

C&D Skilled Robotics, Inc. is now selling is own line of laser-guided vehicles and automated truck-loading vehicles in the U.S. The laser-guided units have been offered by C&D's parent company, Euroimpianti SpA, since 1998. The change allows C&D to act as a single source of technology for all end-of-line automation applications, the company said. The Skilled 800 LGV unit handles transportation of products and pallets from multiple production lines, to and from storage as well as truck-loading areas. The feature eliminates the need for conveyors. The system uses laser positioning, similar to an electronic eye, which relies on reflectors positioned on surrounding walls to determine a vehicle's precise position by triangulation. The laser-positioning system requires no prep work to the customer's floor, such as magnetic or colored tape, and
