This was the beauty of it, of cricket and cricketers in the subcontinent. A young guy, very much his own guy, little heard of, coming out on a big stage and torpedoing a giant. Even if Ajantha Mendis never bowled another ball or got another wicket, his six-for would stand as tribute, a most beautiful tribute in fact, to the art and joy of this region's cricket. It doesn't matter if it is a fleeting thing - often that enhances it - for in that moment, or prolonged moment, you are sucked in and taken along on a ride where nothing makes sense but everything makes you smile and makes the hair on your body stand up. Cricket becomes an experience, a very visceral experience, and not a sport, to be sensed, even touched, but above all to be felt.

"Mandriva provided the data points above as part of The VAR Guy’s Open Source 50 survey -- which will identify the top open source companies in the IT channel. (The survey closes December 18, with results to be published in January 2009.) How does Mandriva's partner momentum compare to the company's Linux rivals? The VAR Guy will share his complete perspective when he unveils the Open Source 50 in January 2009. In the meantime, our resident blogger found Mandriva far more partner-savvy than he had expected."

A recent lawsuit sheds even more light on just how poor quality control is at the US Patent & Trademark Office. The lawsuit specifically was over the firing of a quality assurance specialist, who's supposed to review patent examiner decisions to determine if errors were made in granting or rejecting claims. The guy was fired after it turned out that a random review showed his reviews erred 35% of the time. The guy complained that it was just a random sample rather than looking across his entire body of work, but that's not all that interesting here. What's more interesting is that apparently the "reasonable" cutoff for such QA specialists is a 25% error rate. Considering that their entire job is supposed to be double checking the work of patent examiners, you would think that getting one in four claims reviewed wrong would be ringing some

TEST matches take time to settle into a flow but if South Africa win the toss on Wednesday and bat at the WACA Ground, pull up a pew from the first instant. Graeme Smith is beating his chest about the new and improved Proteas having nothing to fear against the world champions but talk is cheap and Smith cannot hide from his history of failure against Australia.
