Zinman, as guest, leads the orchestra

David Zinman is not a conductor who always digs deep for meaning. And yet in some ways it was very satisfying to hear him Thursday night guest-conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra. He's efficient and workmanlike. He can move the music along, which is beneficent when you're dealing with an ensemble like Philadelphia's, which would happily slow down at the end of every phrase.

Top Chef NY, guest-blogged: Episode 4, Quickfire Challenge with a Trumpian Rocco di Spirito

Due to circumstances more or less beyond my control, I have not had television service since Hurricane Ike. Do. Not. Ask. So--sadly--I have been more or less unable to follow the current and no doubt gripping season of Top Chef. But on the principle of better late than never, I have managed to the secure the guest-blogging services of my sister, the brilliant Melissa Cook of Monkton Ridge, Vermont, to stand in for me during the rest of the season. She has also graciously agreed to recap the first three episodes, too, so in the days to come Cook's Tour will be able to commemorate all the sticky, crumby, messy details of the story so far. Since she is far more thorough--and withering!--than I, I will divide her updates into two easily digestible segments, The Quickfire and The Elimination Challenge.

Guest column: Insight into China Mobile's TD-LTE gambit

By Dr. Cheng Dejie China Mobile has widely trumpeted its development strategy for 4G TD-LTE networks, while recently, a senior China Mobile official publicly stated that 60 percent of China Mobile's investment capital will be put into 4G over the next few years. This has triggered worries by industry insiders that the operator's commitment to China's homegrown 3G standard, TD-SCDMA, is half-hearted, and stirred up debate as to the prospects that a viable industry chain for TD-SCDMA has any chance to develop.

Katy Guest: If that Obama phones again, get rid of him

Why is being Barack Obama much like finding the best strategy for a successful shopping trip at the pre-Christmas, credit-crunch sales? Because the following things are important: get there early; move fast; bring change. In other ways, however, Obama's methods are just not chiming with the culture of the coming recession. These are suspicious times, you see. Nobody trusts anyone. There are moles in our governments. Banks won't do as they're told. Coppers are knocking down our doors. You'd be crazy to take things at face value in these nervy, dog-eat-dog times. So full marks to the Republican congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen last week for her enthusiastic embracing of the culture of distrust.
