Miscalculation by Goldman Sachs Sale of Sanyo Stocks -- Three financial groups couldn?t move in lockstep

Panasonic Corp. has decided to launch a tender bid to acquire Sanyo Electric Co.ˇÇs common stock for 131 yen per share. Three major financial groups -- Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., Daiwa Securities SMBC Group and Goldman Sachs (GS) Group -- had agreed to take part in the takeover bid. The three groups together hold 70% of SanyoˇÇs preferred shares in terms of outstanding common stock. At first, GS rejected the price proposed by Panasonic and even pretended to break away from the negotiations. The end came disappointingly fast.

Groups Fight to Save the Endangered Species Act

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (December 17, 2008) – Environmentalists and commercial fishermen are fighting to protect the Endangered Species Act regulations from last-minute changes by the Bush administration that will dramatically weaken and limit the use of the landmark wildlife protection law, according to legal experts and scientists. The Bush plan has been roundly panned for eliminating science from federal agency decision making and ignoring objections from hundreds of thousands of concerned citizens across the country. In an effort to maintain protection for wildlife, a coalition of groups filed suit today to halt the last-minute rules.

This includes a new three-percent tax on ISPs to pay for new media creation, Canadian content requirements for commercial websites, and licensing requirements for new media broadcasters, including for user-generated content."

Appeals Court Slams Qualcomm, Clarifies Law on Disclosing Patents to Standards Groups

A federal appellate court agreed that San Diego’s Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) should be punished for hiding its work from industry groups developing a new video technology standard. But the three-judge panel ruled that a San Diego trial judge went a step too far by invalidating Qualcomm’s patents on the video compression technology it had concealed.

Tech Firms Oppose Union Organizing

cedarhillbilly passes along a piece from TheHill.com on the chilly reception that tech firms and lobbying groups are giving to a bill promoting union formation, which has a chance of passing in a more strongly Democratic congress and with a Democratic president. "Up to now, large tech groups have been on the sidelines in what is likely to be one of the roughest fights in Congress next year. A few, however, are preparing to weigh in. That makes other tech lobbyists nervous that, by doing so, the industry could sacrifice relatively good relationships with Democrats and, therefore, jeopardize some of their other legislative priorities."

The MPAA's Wishlist For The Obama Presidency - Filters, three strikes and you're out anti-piracy policies...

The transition team of President-elect Barack Obama, in an interesting effort at transparency, has been publicizing all of their meetings with interest groups to their website, and that includes any material being presented by those groups (with public feedback). Whether that accomplishes anything remains to be seen, but it does allow us to see, oh, things like what the MPAA's demands from the Obama Presidency will be. Within the MPAA's wish list (pdf) are requests for "automated detection and removal of infringing content" (ISP filters) and a desire to see the U.S. adopt efforts similar to those recently implemented in the UK and France ("three strikes" polices where your broadband connection is terminated upon the receipt of three DMCA warnings).

Artist Rolf Knie and the rest of the jury will select 49 winners from the entries submitted. The closing date for entries is 15 May 2009.

Energy policy wish lists and pieces of the pie (Power Lines blog)

President-elect Barack Obama said last weekend that the stimulus package due in January should make "down payments on making our economy more energy-efficient." He also said that shaping the stimulus package or packages would not be lobbying-business-as-usual, not pork-barrel politics. Indeed, influential groups' wish lists do seem to indicate that some real energy-efficiency vision is underlying the agendas. But there certainly is lobbying, and lots of it. It would actually be impossible to make the package without groups' input, and that qualifies as lobbying. How much pork-barrel stuff gets through remains to be seen.
