ground: search
Everyone loves twinkling stars and moonlit nights—EXCEPT astronomers. But astronomers are crafty people, so they've come up with ways to mitigate the distortion that Earth's thick atmosphere causes for ground based telescopes (from which stars appear to twinkle). And now, a new image-correction technique has delivered the sharpest whole-planet ground-based picture ever. The Very Large Telescope (VLT) performed a record two-hour observation of Jupiter using a breakthrough technique to remove atmospheric blur. And what a result! Just take a look at that gorgeous image…And this new image reveals changes in Jupiter's smog-like haze, probably in response to a planet-wide upheaval more than a year ago.

MCLEAN, Va., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- QinetiQ North America's Technology Solutions Group today launches its new Dragon Runner Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle (Dragon Runner SUGV). Dragon Runner SUGV is the first fully modular ground robot system capable of both quick reconnaissance and improvised explosive device (IED) disarmament in urban, mountainous or rural environments. Based on a robot originally designed for the U.S. Marine Corps, the modular base unit Dragon Runner weighs less than 20 pounds and can be carried by one person in a standard-issue pack. With field-transformable features that quickly snap or bolt into place -- no special tools required -- Dragon Runner SUGV can morph to fit virtually any mission. Dragon Runner SUGV can adapt quickly to fit a variety of critical mission scenarios.

Watching a space shuttle launch from the ground is undoubtedly very awe inspiring, but this video of a launch takes the biscuit: It's filmed from thousands of feet in the air. A lucky guy managed to film a shuttle rocketing off the ground (possibly STS-124) from inside a passing Air Canada airliner. It's less fire, smoke and thunder than a sea-level view, more "Holy crap, look how fast it goes!" Check it out... you may be as amazed as it sounds like he was. [PointNiner]

The Hubble Space Telescope had a glitch in one of its control systems and turned itself off. Luckily, this happened before the HST repair mission STS-125 got off the ground. NASA is now attempting to fix Hubble from the ground, and possibly replace the faulty system in space, but not until 2009.

Lumenary7204 writes "The Register has a story about the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, a project to build a 6.7 meter effective-diameter ground-based telescope that will be used to map some of the faintest objects in the night sky. Jeff Kantor, the LSST Project Data Manager, indicates that the telescope should be in operation by 2016, will generate around 30 terabytes of data per night, and will 'open a movie-like window on objects that change or move on rapid timescales: exploding supernovae, potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids, and distant Kuiper Belt Objects.' The end result will be a 150 petabyte database containing one of the most detailed surveys of the universe ever undertaken by a ground-based telescope. The telescope's 8.4 meter mirror blank was recently unveiled at the University of Arizona's Mirror Lab in Tucson.

According to Canadian engineers at Queen’s University, there are now more than 8,000 satellites in orbit around the Earth. Of course, if they stop to work correctly, these satellites will not be able to be repaired from the ground and will become space junk. So these researchers have developed a robotic repair system to fix ailing satellites. Right now, they’re writing software to track these satellites. Their tracking software would then be used by an Autonomous Space Servicing Vehicle (ASSV) ‘to grasp the ailing satellite from its orbit and draw it into the repair vehicle’s bay. Once there, remote control from the ground station can be used for the repair.’ I’m somewhat skeptical about the idea, considering that the satellites in orbit have been launched by various countries and companies using very different technologies.

Here’s every kid’s dream — a real robot vehicle that actually reads its terrain and makes adjustments in its movement accordingly. Jared Whelan, Matt Craft and Dave Richards created the “versatile robot” which has a sensor that scans the ground and makes adjustments with reverses and turns. The operator can also remotely select transportation modes. In one mode, the robot’s tracks are raised for steep climbs. It comes with an accelerometer that evaluates the robot’s position relative to gravity. When the robot detects a steep incline, it will accelerate and reconfigure to a lower center of gravity for maximum traction. Once it regains flat ground, the robot reconfigures to its original position.

Intersil Corporation has developed the optimal CD/MP3 stereo 2:1 multiplexer designed to deliver low distortion audio source or load selector solutions with very high signal muting. The Intersil ISL54405 is a single supply, bidirectional, dual single-pole/double-throw (SPDT) analog switch featuring distortion and off-Isolation capabilities into all load types. It is designed to pass analog signals that are positive and negative with respect to ground, with inputs that accommodate ground referenced signals up to 2VRMS, while operating from a single 3.3V or 5V DC supply. The ISL54405 saves cost by eliminating the negative supply and the associated components typically used for amplifier output signal muting. The device also consumes minimal power, reducing the size and heat typical of traditional designs.

Calopteryx notes a New Scientist article on the discovery of "supercritical" water emerging from a vent in the Atlantic Ocean at 407 deg. C (765 deg. F). One of its discoverers actually said, "It's water, but not as we know it"; it's the hottest water ever found on earth. The cause seems to be a huge bubble of magma beneath the ocean floor, 3 km below the sea surface. Meanwhile Nymz shares a journal entry on a hot spot on land: a 2-acre patch in Ventura county, in California, that has heated up to 433 deg. C (812 deg. F). Here geologists blame buried hydrocarbons burning as they get access to air through cracks in the ground. That high temperature was measured a foot below the ground surface.
