US arts collector returns priceless artefacts to Greece

Athens - A US arts collector returned a priceless artefact to Greece on Wednesday as the country continues its long battle for other treasures such as the Elgin Marbles to return to their rightful home. Greece received a fourth century BC bronze vase and remains of a marble tombstone depicting a young warrior from US art collector Shelby White barely a year after it launched a campaign for their return, relying on evidence they were smuggled out of the country.

Santorini Volcano, Greece

One of the largest volcanic eruptions in the past 10,000 years occurred in approximately 1620 BC on the volcanic island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea. This astronaut photograph illustrates the center of Santorini Volcano, located approximately 118 kilometers to the north of Crete (not shown). Prior to 1620 BC, the island of Santorini, now known as Thera, was built up by layers of lava created by overlapping shield volcanoes, and it had experienced three significant eruptions that formed overlapping calderas, or collapsed magma chambers. Around 1620 BC, the fourth (and latest) major eruption created the present-day islands and caldera bay of Santorini Volcano. The caldera rim is clearly visible in this image as a steep cliff forming the western shoreline of the island of Thera.

Vodafone to bring Apple iPhone to India

Wednesday, May 07, 2008 at 2306 hrs Vodafone, on Tuesday, said that it had inked a deal with Apple to become the first telecom operator to officially launch the iPhone in the Indian market along with nine other countries. “Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, India, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network,” said the UK-based telecom giant in a release.

New Acropolis Museum to Recreate the Parthenon Frieze

ATHENS—After a series of delays, the New Acropolis Museum in Athens will open in September, finally displaying the Parthenon, or Elgin, Marbles, reports the Art Newspaper. Since the British Museum retains various pieces of the marbles, the new Athens museum will show the patina-coated originals alongside lighter-colored plaster casts of the pieces removed from Greece.
