Malaysia Orders ISPs To Block Critical Blogs - Blames trouble-making blog-critics for poor political fortunes...

Techdirt points out that the Malaysian government has been trying to silence critical bloggers, who the government blames for their recent problems at the polls. The effort began with the government first (unsuccessfully) trying to pass a law forcing all bloggers to register with the government. When that didn't work, they apparently decided they'd force ISPs in the country to block access to blogs that are critical of the government. After the Malaysia Today website was blocked by state-owned Telekom Malaysia, the website quickly found a workaround for impacted users. In the end, all the censorship likely accomplishes is the creation of more critics.

EFF To Sue Government For Warrantless Wiretapping - Lawsuit against AT&T continues

Congress voted earlier this year to give retroactive immunity to telecoms that had participated in the government’s warrantless wiretapping program, a move that was a huge victory for the telcos and a big setback for the related cases that were all pending at the time. One of those cases was a case filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation against AT&T. It was believed that the case would be dismissed but debate continues about how the amnesty will be applied to allowing the dismissal to take place. The EFF isn’t giving up the seemingly hopeless battle; the group is expanding the lawsuit and plans to sue the government for its role in the wiretapping. Although this wasn’t the route that the EFF wanted to take (since it’s really difficult to follow through with a lawsuit against the government) it is considered to be the only course of a

Governments Around the Globe Have Become Early Adopters of Web 2.0 Strategies.

Will e-government be replaced by Gov 2.0? This is the prediction made by market research firm Government Insights, (GI) an IDC company. E-government was all about putting citizen services on the Web. Gov 2.0 is about assessing, sharing and interacting with information to create new opportunities and to allow agencies to deliver more holistic services to citizens, according to a June 12 Webinar conducted by Government Insights.

British Government Considers Tenfold Increase to Copyright Penalty

Out-Law is reporting that the British government is planning to increase the maximum fine that can be awarded for online copyright infringement tenfold. "The Government and the Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO) are consulting on the plans, which would allow Magistrates' Courts in England and Wales to issue summary fines of Ł50,000 for online copyright infringement. The larger fine is proposed for commercial scale infringements, where the person involved profits from the infringement. The plan would implement another of the recommendations of the Gowers Review of Intellectual Property, the 2006 report by former Financial Times editor Andrew Gowers which has been the foundation of intellectual property policy since its publication."

We're The US Government, So We Can Ignore Pesky Things Like The DMCA

While the federal government of the US has dumped on us dreadful laws like the DMCA, when it comes time for it to follow those laws itself, it takes a pass. Why be inconvenienced like the rest of us? We've talked about how the US government likes to ignore patent law using either "state secrets" or "sovereign immunity" claims, and now it appears they're using that for copyright law as well. CAFC (Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit) has allowed the Air Force to dismiss a DMCA lawsuit lodged against them by claiming "sovereign immunity."

A NEW REALITY: GOVERNMENT AND THE IPOD GENERATION

This report from Reform, an independent thinktank, suggests that government can be transformed for the better if it adopts some of the values of the IPOD generation, which is characterised as insecure, pressurised, over-taxed and debt-ridden. Developing a more open approach to government, providing principled leadership and professionalism as well as communicating in exciting and imaginative ways is seen as the way forward.

Illegal Regime Change Takes Internet By Storm [opinion]

THE British Government appoints the BBC's entire top management. In fact, one can safely say BBC is a mouthpiece of the British Government. Free Marriage Records Search Online

People are generally resigned to having their vital information officially recorded by the government. A great deal of resources is channeled into gathering and managing these records. In the Information Age, it is seen as a required mark of sound democratic governance. This information resource is also not solely reserved for government use only. The public has the right of access to many of the government records too. One example is Public Marriage Records.

Internent filtering test results

We’ve talked a few times before (here for example) about the government’s odious plan to filter internet content in Australia. Basically they want a so-called “clean filter” system which will make it compulsory for all service providers to filter content, forcing those who want to avoid this inconvenience to sign onto a list to by-pass the process. As if the nanny-state implications of this sort of heavy handed government interference aren’t bad enough—especially in light of the Minister’s vile attempt to brand critics as somehow being in favour of child pornography—there is the whole issue of whether it is even technically possible to effectively filter content without, one, blocking content that no-one, not even the government, wants to block, and two, filtering content in such a way that doesn’t slow down your interne
