Dave Dribin, a 34-year-old software engineer in Chicago, used to like bidding on eBay. He scouted out vintage and used goods he could scoop up cheap. But not anymore. Dribin no longer wants to waste hours tracking an auction, especially if he ends up losing out on something he wants. Instead, he just buys things retail when he shops online. "If I really want something, I'm not going to goof around [with auctions] for a small savings," he says.

LONDON (Agencies): England must "move on to the next level" if they are going to compete with South Africa later this season, according to Kevin Pietersen. The South Africa-born batsman, who controversially turned his back on the Proteas in order to pursue an international career with England, believes the team must start to improve this season if they are to have a chance of wresting back the Ashes next year from Australia. England won the 2005 Ashes series on home soil 2-1 but were then overwhelmed 5-0 in Australia in 2006-07. "We are going to have to (move on to the next level), if we are going to beat South Africa," Pietersen told reporters at Lord's here on Monday. "That's going to be the toughest series we have had for a long time, apart from Australia.

"Last fall, the Associated Press claimed that it was ready to change to face the new internet world -- and that meant not just being a gatekeeper, but joining in the conversation. As we noted at the time, though, AP execs said all that, only to immediately follow that up with plans that looked like it was trying to become a new type of gatekeeper. It didn't help that the company had also just sued VeriSign's Moreover division for linking to AP stories along with a title and a tiny excerpt. That sort of thing is clearly fair use -- but the AP doesn't seem to think so. And, now, it's expanding its target list. Rather than just going after the big aggregators (surprisingly, Google settled), it appears that the Associated Press is going after bloggers for merely posting a linked headline and a tiny snippet of text from the article.

We’ve all been hearing a million different things about this “new” iPhone that is suppose to be coming out any day now! I recently spoke to one of my friends who works at AT&T and I guess the new gossip going around is that the new iPhone is going to be cheaper than the original. I don’t know about you guys, but I find this hard to believe. The 3G is suppose to be faster, have GPS, a new glossy black cover (that is said to be color changeable), slightly thicker, updated software and the camera is expected to be better. I’m sure there will be a ton more things that will be changed or newly added to the new iPhone, so it’s a little strange that Apple would make the new iPhone less expensive...Especially, because people are going to buy it no matter how much it is.

An anonymous reader points us to an interview Microsoft's Windows 7 development chief, Steven Sinofsky, did with CNet. He reveals that Windows 7 will be a further evolution of Vista, and will lose the rumored MinWin kernel. "We're very clear that drivers and software that work on Windows Vista are going to work really well on Windows 7; in fact, they'll work the same. We're going to not introduce additional compatibilities, particularly in the driver model. Windows Vista was about improving those things. We are going to build on the success and the strength of the Windows Server 2008 kernel, and that has all of this work that you've been talking about. The key there is that the kernel in Windows Server 08 is an evolution of the kernel in Windows Vista, and then Windows 7 will be a further evolution of that kernel as well.

News streaming out of Microsoft and into the pages of the Wall Street Journal suggests that Microsoft is almost certainly going to launch a hostile bid for Yahoo -- that is, take its takeover proposal directly to shareholders in an effort to oust Yahoo's board and install an MS-friendly slate. Unless it decides not to.

And Lo, it came to pass that, after the blessed angel RIM announced the arrival of the BlackBerry 9000, pointing its followers to a May 12 launch, there came a tumultous cacophony of sound from the masses, who wanted to know if the smartphone was going to get a catchier name, like its sisters, Pearl, and Curve. And the angel RIM paused for a moment and said, "Verily, I say unto you that, from henceforth it shall be known as Bold." And with wailing and gnashing of teeth, the followers rent their garments and, smiting their breasts, said, "Bloody Norah, that sounds more like a washing detergent." [Crackberry]

"Its not going to be this easy next Thursday, Dale!" chided a spectator with a digicam as Dale Steyn walked by with his training kit. "Hah," was the fast bowler's reply. "It may just be easier." Ashwell Prince wasn't as forthcoming of his assessment of the South Africans' dominant position at the end of day one against Middlesex at Uxbridge - and of their easy adjustment to England so far - but it was hard not to see the confidence of the touring team. South Africa are buoyant with less than a week before the first Test at Lord's, make no mistake, despite the fact that their captain is the only one without any real form going into the first of four games this summer.
