BSA and IDC Global Software Piracy Study reveals increase in global piracy

The Business Software Alliance (BSA), the international association established by the software industry to promote a safe and legal digital world, has announced that it has recently released the Fifth Annual BSA and IDC Global Software Piracy Study, which revealed the biggest increase in global piracy in four years, jumping by three percentage points to 38 per cent in 2007. BSA has emphasised that the rapid growth of the IT industry in countries with weak copyright enforcement and expanding internet access have largely contributed to the global trend.

j2 Global Sues Three Over Patents

Los Angeles-based electronic FAX service provider j2 Global Communications said this morning that it has filed three, separate patent infringement suits. j2 Global announced that it has sued Protus IP Solutions INc., Captaris Inc. and EasyLink Services International Corporation. All of the suits allege patent infringement on two of j2's patents, covering what j2 says are described as “Scalable Architecture for Transmission of Messages over a Network.” The lawsuits were filed in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Texas. In all of the cases, j2 Global is looking for monetary damages and injunctive relief from the firms. The new lawsuits come in addition to outstanding patent infringement lawsuits against both Protus and Captaris.

Broadcom Dodges Patent Lawsuit

Irvine-based Broadcom said late Friday that the U.S. International Trade Commission has rejected a patent infringment suit filed against the firm by SiRF Technology Holdings. According to Broadcom, an ITC administrative law judge issued an Initial Determination Friday, which rejected claims from SiRF Technology Holdings that two of its GPS patents were infringed upon by Global Locate, which Broadcom aquired last July. Global Locate is a developer of GPS and Assisted GPS technology used in cell phones and personal navigation devices. Broadcom has its own lawsuit pending against SiRF, including one which was filed by Global Locate before it was acquired by Broadcom, and subsequent patent infringement suits from Broadcom itself. SiRF had sued Global Locate over their GPS technology in December of 2006.
