Book Review: 'The Given Day'

In "The Given Day," Dennis Lehane uses "fierce-terrible" as a two-fisted Irish modifier, an archaic way of signifying tremendous angry power. He not only links the term to comically quaint Irish brogues but also demonstrates, through the gut-wrenching force of this stunning historical novel, exactly what it means.

Fuel given away free in computer game promotion

Drivers gained some respite from the recent hikes in fuel prices after a garage decided to give away free petrol. As part of a promotion for a new computer game, Ł20,000-worth of fuel was being given away free of charge on Friday.

Spectral Force 3 (Xbox 360)

Given such a ghostly title, you'd expect squads of shimmering spirits and imposing armies of the undead to loom ominously over Spectral Force 3. It's true that this strategic role-playing game features fluttering birdmen, bony grave escapees, and magic-wielding vampires--not to mention purring catwomen, ninjas, and matronly goblins hungry for an afternoon snack. But rather than go hog wild with this campy crowd, developer Idea Factory has created an immediately forgettable experience. Spectral Force 3 plays decently enough--as it should, given that it cribs from decades-old games that have already perfected and reperfected the turn-based formula. But for a game featuring a sasquatch militia, it has no personality, and the practically nonexistent story and weak character development will disappoint even the most stalwart genre enthusiasts.

Collecting podcasts for a non-iPod MP3 player--Ask the Editors

If anything's a given about the iPod, it's that the player has a solid history of handling podcasts exceptionally well. This has to do with the firmware on the device itself, but perhaps more credit should be given to the iTunes software, which makes excellent use of its integrated music store interface to aggregate, organize, and promote a wide variety of podcats--likely the widest array available in any one spot. That's great for iPod owners, but what about the rest of us? Never fear: there are plenty of solutions available.

Filings Watch: How Napster Deal Came About: Best Buy Lowered Offer Price During Negotiations

imageHow did the BestBuy-Napster (NSDQ: NAPS) deal come about? Well, after UBS contacted about 80 players over the years (it became a running joke about who was looking at Napster any given week) and had given up, talks started with Best Buy early this year, according to a detailed SEC filing from Napster late on Friday.

Blog: Google rebuffs Android developer community petition

Yet more discouraging news on the Android front. Having hacked off its developer community by releasing updated SDKs to just a small group of chosen devs, Google has now given the brush-off to a petition that called for more to be given to the wider community.

Apple's Tight Rein On iPhone App Store To Boost Nokia?

In the last two weeks, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) has pulled three applications from its stores: the $999-joke app “I Am Rich;” Box Office, which lets users look up movies and buy tickets; and NetShare, an application that turns the phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot. No official reason has ever been given for why the apps have been taken down. It’s easy to see why they yanked NetShare, given that it competes with the wireless broadband services of Apple’s partner carrier AT&T (NYSE: T). The same goes for I Am Rich. Yes, it was a joke, but then some apparently did click on it not believing they would really be charged $999. BoxOffice, however, was a popular app, and a useful one that had gotten favorable reviews. Perhaps its only crime was that it was free and undercuts a revenue share deal that AT&T’s own movie listing and ticketing applicatio

GC 2008: Hardcore RTS Champ Digs Sega's Stormrise

Sometimes the most interesting part of a game demo isn't the game itself. Earlier in the week at the Leipzig Games Convention, I got to check out a presentation for Sega's latest attempt at cracking the real-time-strategy-on-console dilemma, Stormrise. While this was basically the same demo we were given at E3 (check out 1UP's preview for more on that), one thing had changed: the person playing the game. Sanatana Mishra, one of Australia's top Warcraft III players (and sixth in the world at a recent Blizzard tournament held in China) has given his personal seal of approval to Stormrise.

Crown Corporations to Consider Personal Integrity of Persons Applying for Financial Assistance

OTTAWA, ONTARIO, Sep 06 (MARKET WIRE) -- Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and the Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of International Trade, on behalf of the Government of Canada, today announced new considerations that will apply to the procedures of five crown corporations. "The concerned crown corporations will immediately begin to review their policies and programs to ensure that due consideration is given to the personal integrity of persons applying for financial assistance or other benefits from the corporations," said Minister Ritz. "Due consideration will also be given to the effect that a proposed transaction would have on the corporation's reputation and its ability to attract and retain other persons or entities to use the corporation's services," he added.

Slowing ad sales in Europe call for caution on Google, analyst says

Google Inc.'s (GOOG/NASDAQ) online search advertising spending across the pond is showing signs of cracking, according to Ross Sandler, analyst at RBC Capital Markets. "Cyclical headwinds are starting to have an impact on online advertising in the mature geographies in Western Europe," Mr. Sandler said in a note to clients. "Like the U. S. market, search is holding up better than display, but given the mix of advertiser categories, some cyclical pressures in search may be more pronounced." The analyst said that search spending in the travel and finance advertiser category during the third quarter is underperforming, while search engine marketing is seeing lower conversion rates. As a result, Google's international business may not meet expectations and given the risk of disappointing growth, he advised clients to take a cautious approach

Software Spots Spin In Political Speeches

T.S. Ackerman writes "According to an article in NewScientist Tech, there is now software that can identify the amount of spin in a politician or candidate's speech. From the article, 'Blink and you would have missed it. The expression of disgust on former US president Bill Clinton's face during his speech to the Democratic National Convention as he says "Obama" lasts for just a fraction of a second. But to Paul Ekman it was glaringly obvious. "Given that he probably feels jilted that his wife Hillary didn't get the nomination, I would have to say that the entire speech was actually given very gracefully," says Ekman, who has studied people's facial expressions and how they relate to what they are thinking for over 40 years.' The article goes on to analyze the amount of spin in each of the candidates running for president, and the results

Too Easy For Bank Accounts To Spring a Leak

The NYTimes has a cautionary tale of automated clearing house fraud. Parties unknown siphoned money from an individual's bank account. Nothing too unusual there, except that it was an elite private banking account at JPMorgan Chase, and the account holder is out $250K — the bank will only cover $50K of his loss. The $300K came out of the account in small transactions over 15 months. The bank offered no recourse except to open a new account, a large hassle given that the account is more than 20 years old and its holder writes a thousand checks a month. The article details how the spread of electronic settlements between banks has given rise to growing automated clearing house fraud — if anyone gets hold of the magic combination of account number and bank routing number, and once has permission to withdraw funds, all bets are off.

How Close Were US Presidential Elections?

Mike Sheppard writes "I'm a graduate student in Statistics at Michigan State University and spent some time analyzing past US presidential elections to determine how close they truly were. The mathematical procedures of Linear Programming and 0-1 Integer Programming were used to find the optimal solution to the question: 'What is the smallest number of total votes that need to be switched from one candidate to another, and from which states, to affect the outcome of the election?' Because of the way the popular and electoral votes interact, the outcome of the analysis had some surprising and intriguing results. For example, in 2004, 57,787 votes would have given us President Kerry; and in 2000, 269 votes would have given us President Gore. In all there have been 12 US Presidential elections that were decided by less than a 1% margin; mean
