Savery, Rodin Works Go to Getty Museum

It’s not all gloom and doom on the Los Angeles museum front: The J. Paul Getty Museum announced Wednesday that it had acquired a rare landscape by the 17th-century Flemish painter Roelandt Savery and a drawing by the sculptor Auguste Rodin. The Savery work, “Landscape With the Temptation of St. Anthony,” was painted in 1617 and depicts the saint reading in a rustic cell, obvious to demons frolicking around him. The Rodin work, probably from around 1898, is a brown wash and graphite drawing titled “Sphinx,” and depicts a naked female figure in what appears to be a desert landscape. Both works will go on view in the Getty’s East Pavilion
