University Makes Students Take Copyright Quiz To Get Timed Access To P2P

Broadband Reports points us to a rather unique attempt by Missouri University of Science & Technology to deal with the fact that the RIAA/MPAA are upset with students at the university for using file sharing apps. It's using traffic shaping apps to block access to P2P systems... but, it will give students timed access if they first successfully complete a quiz about copyright issues. You need to get a perfect score (or no BitTorrent for you!) and you get six hours, which they hope you're now using for legal file sharing (though, they don't check). If you want more time, you need to ace the quiz again (the questions change). You can get up to 8 "passes" per month.

Ape applicant vies for star on Walk of Fame

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame have gone to the dogs, so why can't Cheeta the chimp get some love? The animal actor, whose credits include the 1967 comedy "Dr. Doolittle" and the "Tarzan" movies, is trying for the seventh time to get a sidewalk star and become the first monkey to get the honor. His handlers have launched an online petition to get supporters to urge the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to give him a star in 2009.

Using Strings To Safely Get Program Usage Information On Linux And Unix

"You could use commands like crash to get the information : This can be a great way to find out the information you need. By typing "crash -h BLARG" you should, theoretically, get a dump of all the help information you need. Unfortunately, not all distro's of Linux and Unix include it by default and not all distros' versions of crash operate the same. Some require you to be proficient in running a debugger against a dump file, afterward. Way too much hassle."

PS3 BioShock Gets Exclusive DLC

Kotaku: BioShock on PS3 is going to get some exclusive DLC. Get your pissing and moaning out of the way now, if you could. Done? Wonderful. Because you can't really mess with BioShock's story by adding extra levels or bosses, 2K are instead adding some things called "Challenge Rooms", which will be self-contained areas (ie, you access it from the main menu, not in-game) designed to get you using your plasmids to solve puzzles

Why I did it: I returned the iPhone 3G after only 6 days!

I have no excuses – I should have known better than to let my gadget envy get the better of me. But, with all the new way cool features added to the iPhone 3G and the fact that my existing AT&T plan allowed me to upgrade at $199, I decided to join the other crazies in line last Saturday afternoon and spend 2 hours to get my hands on a new iPhone 3G. I’ve spent more than 20 hours since then trying to get it to do what I needed it to do (i.e., synchronize with Outlook, stay charged up for more than a day, not die when I touch a button, etc.) and then I spent another 3 hours yesterday trying to return it. For more about why I now feel like a moron, read on…

Parent-Friendly Wireless Bridge to Span 500 Meters?

GonnaBRichYeahYeah! writes "My dad lives down a dirt road 500 meters off the main road. The cable company will not put cable down his lane for any less than a ridiculous sum of $10,000. And he cannot get phone line DSL since he is so far away from central terminal, so he relied on painful 22k/sec dial-up for access to Internet. He got sick of it and relies on Hughes satellite Internet, at $60/month, but he still has to be connected to phone line to upload to the Internet. Its not a good solution, but better than a dial-up. His friend lives on the corner of the main drag with his lane and has cable, thus hi-speed Internet. I suggested that he get a wireless access point, and put it at his friend's house and then get a wireless card for access.

New FISA Bill Would Grant Telcoms Immunity; Vote Is Tomorrow

An anonymous reader writes "This just in: a new 'compromise' FISA Bill (PDF) was just made public, which, the Electronic Frontier Foundation reports, 'contains blanket immunity for telecoms that helped the NSA break the law and spy on millions of ordinary Americans.' The House vote is tomorrow, June 20. After all the secret rooms and everything ... if they get immunity and the public never finds out what happened, the only other logical next step is to convince everyone I know not to get an iPhone." CNN covers this get-out-of-lawsuit play as well.

Google (Probably) Building An Application Store For Android

El Reg has jumped on a comment by Android project leader Andy Rubin at the Google (NSDQ: GOOG) I/O developer conference to infer that the search giant is planning to offer an iTunes-like application store for its Android phones. To be fair, the comment does indicate that pretty strongly and clearly: “It would be a great benefit to the Android community to provide a place where people can go to safely and securely download content and where a billing system would allow developers to get paid for their effort,” he said. ”We wouldn’t have done our job if we didn’t provide something that helps developers get distribution.” As El Reg noted, just because Google builds an application store doesn’t mean it will get onto all the Google phones since third parties will be able to adjust the OS to suit themselves.
