A Christmas Caroll: The Choir of Westminster Abbey, Robert Quinney, dir James ODonnell - the Sunday Times review

Taste in carols is highly personal, generally conservative. I remember how new ones in the King’s broadcast would set my teeth on edge (already gnashing at that first, appallingly male-chauvinist lesson from Genesis). Here, though, all is mostly well. The carols originally commissioned by King’s, by Bob Chilcott, John Rutter and Jonathan Dove, are fine pieces, as are Poulenc’s Quatre motets and a gem by Michael Head. William Mathias’s Ave Rex makes a brilliant conclusion. And, even if the best of the arrangements remains Pearsall’s peerless In dulci jubilo, Stephen Cleobury’s Joys Seven and O’Donnell’s own I Saw Three Ships are delightful. The acoustic is overresonant — the trebles’ final D in the O’Donnell chases itself round the building — but the Abbey choir’s sound is lovely.

Birthing art

Even mothers need to grow up. But for a prominent mother figure in the art world like Chichi Salas, that growth could be as simple as finding a new home for her “kids.” Thus, her brainchild, Gallery Genesis, has graduated from the Artwalk in Megamall to quite possibly a more challenging venue; the Tektite Building in Ortigas. But while much has changed in terms of space, it is highly doubtful that there will be any in terms of management. After all, it was Salas’ respect for Filipino artists that has kept the gallery afloat for the last 26 years. And that high regard shows no signs

The search giant has been the subject of rumors in Forbes, BoyGenius Blog, Google Watch and more. Forbes' intriguing article title is, " Google's Invisibility Cloak" stokes the fire with a not so "Elementary my dear Watson" approach. Review: Koi Pond for iPhone

It’s hard to imagine, with all the great iPhone apps for sale on the App Store, that the top paid app (App Store link) would involve meandering Japanese carp, floating lily pads, and ambient noise. But Koi Pond has indeed taken the app world by storm. Look no further than its slot at the head of the list of the top-selling paid iPhone apps of 2008. (For more on the genesis of this unlikely chart-topper, read Macworld’s interview with Koi Pond’s creators.)
