Studies reveal lifelong gender difference in physical activity

Females of all ages are less active than their male peers. Two studies, presented today (Tuesday 6 January) at a major academic conference, reveal the gender difference in activity levels among school children and the over 70s. Both studies show males to be more physically active than females.

Chemical Pollution Is Destroying Masculinity

myrdos2 writes "A host of common chemicals is feminizing males of every class of vertebrate animals, from fish to mammals, including people. Many have been identified as 'endocrine disruptors' or gender-benders because they interfere with hormones. Communities heavily polluted with gender-benders in Canada, Russia, and Italy have given birth to twice as many girls as boys, which may offer a clue to the mysterious shift in sex ratios worldwide. And a study at Rotterdam's Erasmus University showed that boys whose mothers had been exposed to PCBs grew up wanting to play with dolls and tea sets rather than with traditionally male toys. It also follows hard on the heels of new American research which shows that baby boys born to women exposed to widespread chemicals in pregnancy are born with smaller penises and feminized genitals.

Wildlife experts ponder gender of Santa's reindeer

LUBBOCK, Texas -- There may be a perfectly good reason why Santa doesn't get lost on his annual Christmas globetrot: His flying reindeer just might be female and don't mind stopping for directions.

Computer Games Are Now Gender-Neutral

Despite popular belief, recent scientific studies prove the fact that on-line games are less and less dominated by males, as the stereotype goes. Rather, more than 40 percent of players in popular games such as EVE, World of Warcraft, MU and others are females, the new results show. Gamers who spend more time on their computers also watch less TV, which seems to back-up the players' claims according to which they have a better health condition than other less-active people.

Global Warming Might Cook Up Too Many Male Fish

Many reptiles have no sex chromosomes. Instead, their gender is determined by temperature. In crocodiles, for example, males are hot: eggs incubated in sand above a certain “pivotal temperature” almost always hatch males. That could spell trouble, because Earth is warming so fast that natural selection may not have time to adjust pivotal temperatures. Female crocodiles may become scarce.

Hand cream for inmates

Even hardened criminals have a right to aftershave and hand cream, Germany's highest court said on Tuesday, approving the appeal of a male inmate against gender discrimination.

Breaking the stats down further, 23 percent of those over age 65 said they play at least sometimes. It also found that just 3 percent of teens don't play any video games at all, and that the gender discrepancy between adult men and women who play is only about 5 percentage points.

Study Confirms That Cars Have Personalities

Ponca City, We love you writes "A study has confirmed that many people see human facial features in the front ends of automobiles and ascribe various personality traits to cars. Forty study participants assessed cars based on a system known as geometric morphometrics by viewing high-resolution, 3D computer reconstructions and printed images of 38 actual 2004-06 car models and rating each model on 19 traits such as dominance, maturity, gender, and friendliness, and if they liked the car. Study participants liked best the cars scoring high in the so-called power traits — the most mature, masculine, arrogant, and angry-looking ones. Researchers theorized that over evolutionary time, humans have developed a selective sensitivity to features in the human face that convey information on sex, age, emotions, and intentions.
