In a bid to build even more market share and bring its iPhone to the masses, Apple is partnering with WalMart to give its smartphone the one-two punch it needs. The latest rumor on the Mac rumor site aptly named Mac Rumors has it that the base 4 GB iPhone 3G model will sell for $99. That rumor had surfaced a few months ago and will put pressure on other smartphone makers if Apple will carry out its aggressive pricing strategy. The 4 GB iPhone model was not previously offered. Apple's 8 GB model will still sell for $199 and 16 GB model will remain at $299.

Apple watchers had a decent rumor to chew on this week: Wal-Mart may offer a low-ball version of the iPhone. Apple retired its 4 GB model many moons ago, but could it resurface at a $99 price point? Bloggers also got a chance to kick up some dirt in a perennial Apple bloodsport: security baiting. Naturally, there was no shortage of people willing to share their reasoned, concisely expressed opinions on the matter.

IconMy first experience with Linux on a PPC machine was Pegasos PPC and Debian. Last weekend I upgraded my Cube G4 450 Mhz and with a blazingly fast 120 GB 7200 RPM WD drive (for just $58!) to replace the default (and extremely slow) 20 GB Maxtor IDE drive. In this vast drive space, there is enough room for more than one operating system, so I decided to install Yellow Dog Linux 3.0 (and then upgrade to 3.0.1 via APT) as an addition to Mac OS X 10.3 Panther. Read more for my impressions of YDL 3.0.1 and check some screenshots too.

Well, the reports were half right ... Wal-Mart will start selling the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone Sunday in nearly 2,500 stores but not at the bargain rates some were predicting. With two-year AT&T (NYSE: T) plans, the black 8 GB model will run for $197, a mere two dollars lower than the usual $199, while the 16 GB model will sell in black or white for $297, a similarly small discount. Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) becomes the second retailer to gain U.S. distribution rights. Best Buy began selling the 3G phone earlier this year; until then, the iPhone was sold only at Apple or AT&T retail outlets. The retail expansion through Best Buy and now discount chain Wal-Mart should help Apple continue to move the iPhone beyond early adopter and gadget-head status into more ubiquitous use.
