How green is your car?

With gas prices more than $4 per gallon, many drivers have suddenly seen the (green) light, seeking regular fuel and hybrid models that squeeze every last mile out of a gallon.

Review: Fuel mileage trackers for iPhone

Back when I learned to drive—no, it wasn’t in the Model T—one of the things my father instilled in me was the need to track my vehicle’s gas mileage. Such information would alert me to problems before they became major issues, or so I remember hearing. For some reason, that particular lesson has stuck with me over the years, even as cars have evolved with systems that will find trouble spots long before they become obvious in a mileage book. So in every car I’ve owned, I’ve always kept a small notebook and pen. Every time I fill up, I pull out the notebook, and jot down the miles driven, gallons bought, and (usually) the cost per gallon. I then transfer these figures to a spreadsheet and track and calculate my miles per gallon over time.

Underground FEMA fuel tanks could leak

Workers remove a 10,000-gallon underground gasoline storage tank at a gas station in Sacramento, Calif., in 2003. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has known since at least the 1990s that tanks under its supervision around the country could be leaking fuel into soil and groundwater, according to Associated Press interviews and research.

Dealer woes put buyers in driver's seat

Gasoline prices skyrocket above $4 a gallon and car buyers scramble to switch to smaller, more fuel-efficient cars -- or stop buying new vehicles altogether.

Everything but the Fishing Stinks

Every time he goes fishing, he takes several five-gallon buckets full of foul-smelling catfish chum -- fermented soybeans that have turned many a stomach.

Save Benjis for iPhone

In any economy, comparison-shopping is merely prudent. In a tough economy, it's a must. In an era of US$4-a-gallon gas, driving from store-to-store is stupid. In an age of information, there is no shortage of data to sort.

Hypermiling can slash fuel consumption

Before you decide to ease your pain at the pump by downsizing your vehicle or even by switching to public transportation, why not change your driving habits and boost your miles per gallon by 20 percent to 40 percent?

High cost lowers demand for premium gas

Turn on the TV and you'll see that CNN is keeping a running count on the number of days in a row that the price of gasoline has fallen. At last count, it was more than 30 days, and the price of a gallon of regular is now about $3.70 on average nationwide.

As Gas Prices Rise, Customer Satisfaction Falls on Automotive and Travel Web Sites

NEW YORK, NY -- 08/18/08 -- iPerceptions Inc. (TSX-V: IPE), a leading provider of web-focused Voice of Customer analytics, announced today that customer satisfaction with automotive and travel web sites hit a 12-month low in June 2008 as prices at the pump climbed to over $4.11 per gallon nationwide. According to the iPerceptions Satisfaction Index (iPSI), customer satisfaction declined from 7.54 to 7.30 on a 10-point scale between June 2007 and June 2008. Customer dissatisfaction was also pronounced on travel web sites, where satisfaction levels fell from 7.12 to 7.00 in the past 6 months.

The Baltimore Sun Dan Rodricks column

(Baltimore Sun, The (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sep. 9--So at what point, as the gas prices fall and maybe even stabilize, do Americans consider buying SUVs again? I know it sounds crazy -- that common-sense adults would go back to the fuel-sucking SUVs, with the price of gas floating between $3 and $4 a gallon, the economy stumbling, unemployment rising, the national debt growing and a cloud of uncertainty overhead. But it could happen. It's happened before.

Greener Skies: Quiet, Fuel-Efficient Airplanes Race in NASA Challenge

This past weekend, a NASA-sanctioned 400-mile "personal air vehicle" race was held in Santa Rosa, CA, to see who had created the quietest, most fuel-efficient plane that's still reasonably fast. Those involved hope pushing these ideas forward will make personal airplanes cost effective someday. These PAVs run as quiet as a pickup truck while averaging a fuel efficiency of 25 to 30 miles per gallon. Four planes showed up for the challenge and $100,000 in prize money was awarded, though the most intriguing craft of them all, a modded DA-20 that runs partially on biodiesel, was unable to compete because of a faulty sensor. In the end, the big winner was the Pipistrel Virus, a two-seater with tech-happy features such as three GPS modules, terrain visualization screen and a rocket-propelled parachute that deploys in the event of a mid-air

Simple Device Claimed To Boost Fuel Efficiency By Up To 20%

Ponca City, We love you writes "Temple University physics professor Rongjia Tao has developed a simple device that could dramatically improve fuel efficiency in automobiles by as much as 20 percent. The device, attached to the fuel line of a car's engine near the fuel injector, creates an electric field that thins fuel, reducing its viscosity so that smaller droplets are injected into the engine. Because combustion starts at the droplet surface, smaller droplets lead to cleaner and more efficient combustion. Six months of road testing in a diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz automobile showed an increase from 32 miles per gallon to 38 mpg, a 20 percent boost, and a 12-15 percent gain in city driving. 'We expect the device will have wide applications on all types of internal combustion engines, present ones and future ones,' Tao wrote in the stud
