g1: search
Big news in the G1 jailbreak world today. The guys at the xda-developers forum have snagged RC29 and RC7 firmware images. By copying these to a FAT32-formatted SD card, you can flash these already signed images to your G1 and jailbreak your G1.

Google, which has become a powerhouse in the search category, has developed a new cell phone operating system called Android, and T-Mobile's G1 cell phone is the first piece of hardware that uses this new operating system. With both touch screen and built-in keyboard, the G1 is set to take on the Blackberry as well as the iPhone. Geeks everywhere love the G1 because the Android operating system is based on open-source code rather than proprietary operating systems like Microsoft's Windows Mobile or Apple's iPhone. That means that anybody can make changes to the operating system without consulting or paying Google. Also, for the most part, anyone can write applications that run on the G-1. So we set out to find out if this is just a cell phone for techies to love, or if it a serious competitor in the smart phone segment of the market.

Just a mere short month after the launch of the G1 in the UK, T-Mobile, its exclusive carrier, has cut the price of the tariff to keep the handset competitive with other high end smartphones; but it’s not a reaction to poor sales, reports Mobiletoday.co.uk. The G1 is now free to customers signing up for an 18-month contract of £30 a month. When the phone launched in early November, the tariff was priced £10 higher at £40 a month. The hope is that the lower price will capture a wider base of consumers. A T-Mobile spokesperson said the operator was âwell on trackâ to hit their sales forecasts. Some of the G1âs competitors include Vodafoneâs Blackberry Storm, launched in mid-November, as well as the iPhone which is getting an additional push from more holiday season advertising.

T-Mobile's HTC-made, Android-based G1 mobile phone debuted to much hype. But T-Mobile's G1 lacked some functionality. Now, rumors are swirling that T-Mobile will release a G2 Android phone that improves upon the G1's weaknesses, such as a lack of desktop synchronization. But a quickly released G2 may be a bad PR move for T-Mobile.

"1. Poor Bluetooth Management: When attempting to pair the G1 with the nav-system in my car while I had the currently paired Motorola headset in my pocket, the G1 refused to let go of the headset and pair-up with the nav-system which had been previously paired-up. I nearly wrecked my car about three times while trying to get it to accept this simple, obvious command. Bluetooth pairing with devices to which the G1 has already been paired (i.e., the access code has already been given and it has been told to remember the pairing) ought to be a simple matter of touching the device to be paired on the screen. This is a major problem that ought to be resolved by the folks at Google, or HTC, or T-Moble."

The free and open source software community has been waiting for the G1 cell phone since it was first announced in July. Source code for Google's Android mobile platform has been available, but the G1 marks its commercial debut. It's clearly a good device, but is it what Linux boosters and FOSS advocates have long been anticipating?

With the Google Android T-Mobile G1 having the open source platform makes it just about as flexible and as powerful as any other smartphone out there in mobile land; that is unless you are a G1er who wants their T-Mobile G1 to animate screen transitions much like the Apple iPhone does.

Android may be the newest mobile platform to hit the market, but that doesn't mean you don't have ample accessory options for the T-Mobile G1, the first 'gPhone' to hit the streets. Try picking up a case, holster or spare clip for the G1 fan on your list. Or, perhaps most practically, consider the BodyGuardz Protective Skin ($24.95).
