It’s pretty much the only thing that’s getting us through what has to be the most depressing day of the year… Celebrity Big Brother is back tonight! We’ve already revealed some of the names strongly rumoured to be entering the house on tonight’s live show (Channel 4, 9pm) and now we can tell you a few more juicy hints about the series, straight from the horse’s mouth. “We're trying to make it a funny few weeks,” says Endemol big-shot Phil Edgar-Jones. “The task producers are asked to come up with daft silly things for celebrities to do. Whether or not they will always be funny we don't know. There might be romance, there might be conflict, there might be all the usual stuff we can't control. We have designed on paper some amusing tasks with some particularly funny costumes.

Time to get ridiculous! The winter holiday season is all too often filled with seriousness instead of celebration. Let's do something to lighten the mood. Time to be silly and just enjoy ourselves. The more absurd the situation, the better! This is also an excellent opportunity for those of you who enjoy setting up creative interpretations of themes. This is finally your excuse to have a water balloon fight where a few of the balloons are filled with things like chocolate pudding instead of water. Put those thinking caps on and get creative. Got pets or kids? You've got it easy, those subjects are always up to something funny.

rubber ducks photo photo: (CC) Gaetan Lee I admit that this one isn?t the deepest piece of news out there, but I find it too funny (and somehow interesting) to pass up repeating. The Guardian is reporting that NASA wants its rubber duckies back. And if you happen to be a sailor, fisherman or cruise passenger in the Arctic could you please send any you find bobbing out at see back to them. Oh, there?s a $100 reward for the first person to find one. That?s the funny part; this is how the US space age...

Funny, isn’t it, how Microsoft manages to come up with a customer testimonial about how cost-effective Office is just when open source vendors are talking up the savings their customers achieve with open source? It’s not surprising — especially in a down economy where everyone is tightening belts and trimming excess.

A funny thing happened on my way to Eastern Europe last week. I sent out a Twitter message saying I was heading to Prague and Berlin and wondered if there were any bloggers or online media people I could meet. I got a reply from Robert Cox of the Media Bloggers Association (MBA), telling me that Radim Hasalik in Prague wanted to start a branch of the

It’s funny, but “open source” and “burgeoning” are not exactly words I would have expected to see in the same sentence with “Microsoft” even last year. But that’s exactly how writer David Worthington described Sam Ramji’s take on open source at Microsoft — burgeoning.

It’s funny what can happen over the course of a year: Boris Johnson has gone from some-time quiz show host to mayor of London; Facebook has changed from something your slightly-odd nephew might use to an acceptable business tool; and the English cricket team has transformed from over-hyped and disappointing to… oh, hang on, no change there. Depressing thoughts on the state of our national team aside, the reason for my spot of backwards-gazing is that it has now been 12 months since the launch of Office Communication Server 2007.

It's a funny thing how Microsoft succeeds in getting their logo and the Windows logo plastered on everything-- computers, advertising, and even other companies' ads. That "We recommend Windows Vista!" blurb is on every darned ad and product catalog that exists, it seems. Every word that falls from the mouths of Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer is dutifully recorded and reported. And yet the news media go all forgetful when they're reporting on yet another malware outbreak. The most recent example of this is the mass worm outbreak at our largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan. Or perhaps it was military computer networks in other locations-- I read a couple dozen news stories on this, and each one is a little different. So my guess it's very widespread and they don't want to admit just how bad it is.
