Phoenix_taletell_3 Mars Phoenix sent home a series of images of frost accumulating on the mirror of the telltale --a four-inch instrument used to sense wind direction and velocity on the lander. Although frost was also seen accumulating on the ground a few days ago, and around rocks during the Viking missions in the 1970’s, this image is striking because of how the frost sparkles on the mirror’s surface.

Image: Water frost appears in this image the Phoenix Mars Lander's Surface Stereo Imager took on Aug. 14, 2008, at 6 a.m. local Mars time on Sol 79, the 79th Martian day after landing. The frost begins to disappear shortly after 6 a.m. as the sun rises on the landing site. The sun was about 22 degrees above the horizon when SSI took the image. Light at that oblique angle enhanced the detail of the polygons, troughs and rocks in the surrounding terrain. The image is false-color, enhanced to bring out details in the terrain. (NASA/JPL-Calech/University of Arizona/Texas A&M University) Water frost around the spacecraft hints that Martian fall is coming soon.

The Phoenix lander's Surface Stereo Imager took this image at 6 a.m. on Sol 79 (August 14, 2008 here on Earth), and a thin layer of water frost is visible on the ground around the landing area. From subsequent images, the frost begins to disappear shortly after this image was taken as the sun rises on the Phoenix landing site.
